.:Imrahil:.
The elves are leaving Middle Earth... All elves? Why? Bilbo leaves with the last boat, so are all elves gone? If Sauron is just a servant, who is the bigger evil? What lies beyond the sea? What lies beyond Harad, Rhun, the North..?Does anyone know?
handsomestranger
Well if you had the option of living in either Middle Earth or Valinor, which would you pick?
DreamOfTheRood
1) The elves are leaving, because technology is on the rise. The magics of nature are failing, and their power rests in that magic. The symptoms are all over middle earth. For instance, the ent-wives are gone. They were a strong force for nature, but they're gone. In fact, much of middle-earth is failing and fading away. That's why the Third Age ended. Men were not and are not reliant upon magical powers; thus, we survived and thrived in the Third Age, according to Tolkien's mythology. 2) Bilbo leaves with the last boat to leave. However, there are boats that come back on at least two occassions. The first occassion is to get Arwen after her husband, Aragorn, dies. The second is to retrieve Legolas after Gimli dies. 3) Sauron was a servant of a darker evil who was never named as far as I know. 4) Valinor. 5) Everyone north of Harad was destroyed in the first war against the darkness and the resulting war against sauron. Harad and Rhun were originally kingdoms of men; however, the only two kingdoms left after the war against sauron were Gondor and Rohan. Gondor once extended much further south, but eventually those southern cities faded away. 6) I know.
TheDeadTree
Read the Silmarillion, as most of this is covered in it. 1. As for the Elves leaving, Valinor was most of their kind's original home. Had it not been for the war of the Jewels, and the oath of Feanor, most of the elves that are in ME would have stayed in Valinor. 2. Bilbo leaves because he has to be healed, just as Frodo will be, and Sam as well. However they cannot stay in Valinor. The gift of Illuvatar cannot be undone, eventually they will die. 3. Sauron was the servant and most terrible weapon of the original evil of Middle-Earth, Morgoth. While Sauron is a maia, just like Gandalf, Saruman, the Balrogs, or Radagast, Morgoth is one of the original creations of Eru/Illuvatar. The first to rebel against Eru's will. 4. Originall, the earth was not curved, and one could reach Valinor simply by sailing west. However this was a exsclusive to the Eldar(elves) only. At one point in the second age, the men of Numenor fell under the influence of Sauron, and were coaxed into sailing to the forbidden west. This brought dire consequences, and the entire island of Numenor was destroyed by the Valar. After this, the world was bent. 5. Outside of Harad, Rhun, and the North is not touched apon too much. The far North being incredibly cold (it was also contained the original Fortress of Morgoth) and the far south being incredibly hot. Read the Sillmarillion. It's a challenge, but you'll understand so much more of the LOTR trilogy afterward. If your really interested in a challenge, read the Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien as well. drowst
Dreamoftherood sayeth: 2) Bilbo leaves with the last boat to leave. However, there are boats that come back on at least two occassions. The first occassion is to get Arwen after her husband, Aragorn, dies. The second is to retrieve Legolas after Gimli dies. Actually, in the appendices for Return of the King, Arwen goes to the now unihabited Lothlorien to die, on the hill where she and Aragorn had sworn their love. Also, Gimli and Legolas leave for the west together. Tolkien makes it a point that Gimli going was a rare event indeed. He leaves it unanswered if all Elves leave, but he infers that some stay quite awhile after Bilbo and Frodo depart. Sam could have also gone to the havens, since he did carry the ring for a short time.......
Breton Thief Oriana
seeing as Valinor is supposed to be like the unknown continent, North America, in history, then id say that they would. it all fits with a sort of 'English Mythology' that the author was trying to create. Maquissar
Also, I think I remember that while Galadriel sailed to the West along with Bilbo and Frodo, Celeborn went on living in Middle Earth for a while, and sailed to the West only much later. Or am I mistaken? It's been a while since I last read LOTR :)
