lakerat1
Hey All,I have a few newby questions for ya's.My first and only PC game was Half-Life 1.0 but have finally gotten to the point in my life where I actually have some leisure time to play games.I've never been a "Gamer",just picked up HL to see what all the racket was about and enjoyed playing for a spell but wasn't really that into it. A couple of yrs. ago I bought a XBox 360 for the grandkids when they came over and screwed around with it some, bought various titles for the kids and a few for myself, all FPS.The usual "must have" games recco'd by my boys for when they visit. I just don't get into the whole "following a gun barrel around" deal(and yes I own and utilize firearms).Played Halo/Gears of War the longest but tired of that too. I started hearing about this new game called "SkyRim" and did some reading about it,hmmmm.I always liked "Conan" style stuff sez I,buy a copy for the XBox,what's to loose? Didn't take me but a single night to figure out I'm an RPG guy. SkyRim has blown me away, totally.I don't even want to tell you how many hrs. I have wrapped up in this game, learning to play a game in the first place and then getting consumed by it,whoa. It's a first for me and my boys/nephews are all smiling at the "oldmanz" new passion. Sorry to ramble here but I thought some back ground was nessasary. Questions.I want SkyRim on computer,is it best to buy the hard copy from a retailer or download from Steam? I don't care about any "rights or wrongs" arguments as far as that stuff goes but I'm having a hard time figuring out if I DL from Steam, will I actually have an image on my hard drive that I can save to a back-up or is it all on their servers and stays there?I get the DRM deal but still want the bits for my very own little platters. How to save to my own? Finally,I Love this modding aspect, gets the geek in me all happy! New stuff to learn. If I DL from Steam and DL mods. by way of the "WorkShop",are the many fine mods. I see on this site going to be compatible with each other?I don't care to get involved in a "us versus them" deal,I get enough of that with some of my other sites but do understand the different view points.Great site and Lots to learn for sure. Staind716
Personally I like the hard copy myself but a lot of people like the convenience of the Steam download. I am an older gamer and prefer to have something in hand for my money. If you really want to learn how to use mods correctly I recommend the Nexus because it gives you more control over your modding and the Workshop still has a lot of bugs to work out. Also if you want a really good guide to modding I would recommend STEP from the Nexus. It is a comprehensive guide to modding and tweaking your game and is what I used to learn how to mod. Good luck and enjoy!
Werne
I bought a hard copy, though downloading from steam is all the same. The only advantage of the hard copy is that you don't need to download the entire game, which is good if your connection is crap like mine. When you download the game through Steam you get an already installed game and all you need to do is just launch it. If you ever need to reinstall it you can download it through steam again, there is no image or backup on your hard drive. As for the mods, I use Nexus only, that way I have control over the files I download and control over any future mod updates. Also there is the problem of compatibility, load orders, FOSE dependant mods, etc. that can mess up the game, and with Skyrim Launcher you don't have any control over your files/updates and you can't launch FOSE through it. I admit, Workshop has some pretty good mods as well that aren't available on the Nexus but I basically stay away from there because of the many limitations. Oh, and welcome to the Nexus . DarthFiscus
congratsi would recommend to buy a copy cuz i like to hold something in my hands :-)but you will get the whole game data from steam and can download it over and over again if you have the proper internet connection (about 6 gb if i'm right)for the mods i would recommend you to use the Nexus Mod Manager, because not all mods are compatible with eachother. Imagine a mod wich adds an object to a specific house and another mod disables the whole house itself - as an extreme example. With the Mod Manager you can easily install the Mods and the Programm restores the previous data if you have problems with the mod and want to delete it.Many Authors list some possible compatibility problems in their mod description aswell. Tamberlaine
Can't wait to retire so I can play more. Just another 30 years! On the upside, I bet the graphics will be amazing by then. I've bought a few games direct from Steam: GTA 4, Civ 5 ... I am useless at retaining passwords and games cases and I reckon it will be easier when I get new computers if Steam has all my games ready for me to download. hector530
It's Skyrim not SkyRim. It doesn't matter where you get skyrim all legal copy's use steam. Too bad you missed the steam holiday sale elder scrolls 3,4 and 5(skyrim) were 50 dollars.

SergeantGrrock
"I want SkyRim on computer,is it best to buy the hard copy from a retailer or download from Steam?" Personally I would always prefer to have my own copy of a game but I can't see how one choice has any advantage over the other. This will boil down to your personal preference. "I don't care about any "rights or wrongs" arguments as far as that stuff goes but I'm having a hard time figuring out if I DL from Steam, will I actually have an image on my hard drive that I can save to a back-up or is it all on their servers and stays there? I get the DRM deal but still want the bits for my very own little platters. How to save to my own?" No matter how you choose to install the game, you will have a root directory for the game where data, saves and mod files will go. "Finally,I Love this modding aspect, gets the geek in me all happy! New stuff to learn. If I DL from Steam and DL mods. by way of the "WorkShop",are the many fine mods. I see on this site going to be compatible with each other?" Even if you choose "Nexus only" mods there could be mod compatability problems. It's best to make sure you read a mods comment section (I recommend at least the most recent 5 pages) and of course the mod authors description page where (in many cases) mod conflicts will be listed. I would stick with Nexus Mod Manager for the time being but I'm bias at this point. :D

natelovesyou
Get a physical copy. It's the same price, and you can install it off the disc which is WAY faster than through Steam I feel, and, if you ever lose the disc after activating it you can still download it again in the future. Also, don't use Steam Workshop. It's no good, the rating system and search sucks I think. Use Skyrim Nexus, we're the source of most of it anyway. Edit: Also, Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) is awesome! And, using a community like what we have hear cannot be beat. Edited February 22, 2012 by natelovesyou
