Creating High Res Textures?

Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to explain to me how to turn a vanilla resolution texture into a high resolution texture? Do I simply create a higher res texture and rename it to match a vanilla texture and viola? Or do I have to open the textures Mesh object in Blender and export a high res uv map? I've never tried to make a high res texture before and all of the retextures I've done have stayed at the vanilla resolution, but it seems as though people enjoy having variety (ie: high and low res texture options). That being said I would appreciate knowing how to facilitate a larger audience by being able to offer multiple resolutions so any help would be greatly welcomed.

I am fairly confident in my abilities to use both Photoshop and it's .dds plugin, but if the process involves exporting a higher res uv map out of Blender than I would need a somewhat detailed set of instructions to do that as I'm not quite as comfortable in Blender yet.

So when/if you decide to help me out and post some instructions below please keep in mind that I'm using Photoshop CS5 x64 and the latest stable versions of Blender 2.5x, Python, and Nifskope and they're all installed and running correctly to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks in advance to anyone who posts a solution to my dilemma!
