Graphics Quality & Graphical Modding

My Laptop decided it was happy to run Skyrim at "high" which I was quite impressed with.

The walk down from Helgen was fine, don't know what the actual frame rate was, but it more than playable.

I then decided to pop over to Morthal, and found that the frame rate drops in the swamps. Fair enough. Will dropping down to medium make a difference?

My other question is regarding mods. If you're running a texture mod, then what difference does running medium/high etc. make? For example, what would look better, Vanilla high or modded medium? Referring to your high-res texture mods here.

To put it simple, everything i have goes way past ultra. and i'm also referring to my .ini tweaks. not just mods.

That sounds like you're running a high-end rig though... I'm not. Therefore need to decide what's best: high Vanilla or modded Medium.

Default auto detection and settings always seem way overly optimistic.

You could answer your own question about the swamps by just trying it. It would even be faster than waiting for a response here. Also, it's really the only way to know for sure. You could also try custom settings, experimenting with turning on or off water reflections and maybe turning off anti-aliasing.

Have you ever looked at any of the options for specific settings or in the advanced settings tab? Click on the global setting for medium and you should see that textures are still set to high. Thus, medium should still get you high res textures when you've downloaded them.

I've not looked into any settings myself as of yet. This has only dawned on me this afternoon (UK) while sat in work so not had chance to try anything.

Interesting that the auto-detect is optimistic, I'll have to look into dropping to medium and having a fiddle with the advanced settings as you said. Thanks a lot.

Yes, turn off AA in the game (you could turn it on separately through your vid driver software), and reduce the draw distances (you can do this while in-game too). In all likelyhood it'll look better with medium settings and better textures, but if your machine has problems running vanilla on the higher settings, make sure any texture pack you get is the lower-res version (bunch of 1024 or 2048.) Do you already have the official hi-res pack?

I've seen auto-detect produce both optimistic and pessimistic results. Best to fiddle either way.

No I'm not running the official pack. How easy is it to remove once installed? I've got the game very playable right now, it'd be nice to bump the textures but if it drops the FPS then I'll want to go back to the original textures.

I wouldn't bother if you don't already have it. You'll get better results with the various texture mods.

Just downloaded it... Straight to the trash can, and so begins the search for an alternative.
