Finally gonna give this a go

Sorry for the psuedo-spam, but I'm DL'g from steam as I type (looks like it's going to be a long haul), and am pretty jazzed about trying out Skyrim and figured I'd get my ya ya's out by blabbing in my first ever foray into the Skyrim portion of the Nexus. I've never played a game where I couldn't shoot bullets, laser beams or missiles at my enemies, so that oughta be a twist. I've been trying out melee weapons in FONV lately though, and they are indeed pretty fun. Dragons, magic, swords... that whole scene will be totally new. Man, I hope the bows & arrows pack some clout so I can satisfy my propensity for projectiles.

Next step - mods of course! Sounds like the mods for Skyrim are abundant to say the least, so I'll be lookin' through the uploaded files section a LOT. Texture mods will likely be the first thing I look at... and, go figure, I just noticed an actual Steam DLC for Hi-Res textures... and free no less? Geez, that's a surprise. Guess I gotta figure out the mod manager scene too, since FOMM won't be much help.

Any way.... blah, blah, blah.

*looks at DL progress* up to 7% now - woo hoo!

(Man I sure hope this game's not as buggy as FO3 and FONV were in the early days of those releases.)

Let the [fill in whatever it is you do in this game] commence!!

Skyrim is a good game for what it is. I think you'll enjoy it if you're familiar with a typical Bethesda title. One the plus side, the environment is really awesome, and they really did an awesome job with the music. The overall atmosphere is awesome. On the bad side, there's a pretty hefty amount of bugs and a few of them seem to be game breaking. Skyrim hardly ever seems to crash though, as long as you have everything setup properly. Definitely a huge improvement over FO3 and FNV.

FYI, I wouldn't mess with the official HD texture pack unless you have 1GB+ of video memory. I have a card with 896MB and I have nasty stuttering with it installed. It's not much of an improvement over the default textures either. You'd be better off sticking to texture packs on Nexus.

Not really, just play a mage xD

If you are familiar with the wrye flash, wrye bash works for skyrim in terms of installing, and is much recommended as neither steam or nmm is good at the load order thing. I do not recommend using steam workshop at all (no different versions, no good author user communication, no going through the download to see what you are actually installing, automatic and very crappy load ordering, really annoying auto-update that makes the game download for 15 minutes when launched)

For balance, I'll recommend the opposite. Don't be afraid to use Steam. It has been working well for me.

Plus, some of my favorite mods are on Steam but not on Nexus!

Thanks for the input!

Dunno what in heck a Mage is, but I'll be checking that out soon enough. I seem to recall a World of Warcraft TV ad in which Mr. T said he played as a Mage - if it's good enough for Mr. T...

edit: just DL'd the STEP thing - looks like that'll be very handy indeed. Def gonna check out the wrye flash/bash thing too. Don't know much about it but I've heard good things.

Some examples please? Always interested in new mods.
