Crashing on loading specific cells

I know that crashes are a common enough problem, and something along these lines has probably been posted before (despite me using the forum's search feature), but I get crashes when loading certain cells.

 

The thing that appears to be odd about this problem is that only certain cells crash the game, and always do whenever I try to load them. Notable cells causing this problem are the Vahtacen entry level, Echo Cave Necromaner's Chamber, and the Sancre Tor entry level. I am running a lot of mods, but I've tested things with most of them disabled and the problem still occurs (the only one I haven't tried to disable is OOO, but I've put that at the top of my load order list and I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be making the game crash - at least, it didn't a while back). I'm sure that this isn't a hardware issue, as the bug (as I've said) appears to be limited to specific cells as opposed to all processor- or memory-intensive areas. But I could be wrong.

 

The game always crashes in a similar fashion: It'll reach halfway along the load bar, and then "stutter" (go back and forward one or more frames), then crash to a black window (not fullscreen), then die after hanging for a while. If I restart the game and try again, it'll crash at earlier and earlier stages of loading each successive time I attempt to load the cell, until it crashes almost the moment the loading screen appears.

 

This is a relatively new problem, and so far I've used the CS to console-hack my way around quests the bug is rendering impossible, but it's really starting to get on my nerves now.

 

Things I've tried in an attempt to sort this out:

dxdiag has found no issues with anything.

Tried a clean boot to clear my paging file, made no difference whatsoever.

Tried disabling all mods except OOO.

Tried running Oblivion on lowest graphics settings.

Tried deleting oblivion.ini and letting it rebuild.

 

It's quite a mystery.

Try making a new game with all your mods currently active, and going to those places (cheating). If the new game works, it's something which exists within your save, in which case you may need to get somewhere distant, like an inn second floor (a cell which is only connected to another interior cell) open console, and use pcb, and rmp. This should revert the data in those cells (as well as most the world) back to its initial (game start) state. If you have items sitting outside of containers (in house display cases/racks) you should move them to actual containers if you wish to keep those items.

 

If that new game doesn't work, disable only OOO, and then try with another new game. Then try loading OOO right after Oblivion.esm, activating it, and doing another new game.

 

You should also ensure that all your data files are in the right place. OOO adds a few new creatures, one of those creatures may be missing files, or be loading wrong. To find this, open OOO in the CS (not as active), and do a preview on most of the creatures. If the CS crashes while loading that creature, it may be the cause of the problem. It may even be due to creatures/npcs with a shader. Most of those places mentioned are places with alot of undead, and OOO uses shaders for spectral creatures/NPCs. Installing another mod which changes default undead appearance could still be causing issues since the data files are present. Almost every area contains ghosts, wraiths, so you should probably start there.

Funny you should say that, as the game seems to often become slightly unstable in Putrid Hand lairs.

You should also ensure that all your data files are in the right place. OOO adds a few new creatures, one of those creatures may be missing files, or be loading wrong. To find this, open OOO in the CS (not as active), and do a preview on most of the creatures. If the CS crashes while loading that creature, it may be the cause of the problem.

 

You were spot on there. I tried previewing a Faded Wraith and the CS crashed; this fits because the save with this problem is level 17. I'm pretty sure this is the source of the problem...

 

Edit: Yes, it was. Problem is now fixed.

Hey I'm having almost exactly the same problem with Putrid Hand. It made the mages quest impossible until i creatively used cheats and even then it was a very painful experience to get to levels of dungeons that didn't crash. Now I notice many Putrid hand Necromancers have lines sticking out of them that go on infinitely and some places still crash. I saw your solution of going to the CS and checking out each room but once you found the problem how did you solve it?? Is there a way to selectively disable non-working creatures or force make them work? THANKS!
