Mychael
Has anyone considered making a mod in which the blacksmiths are the ones doing item upgrades and academic wizards the enchantments? I mean grinding my smithing and enchanting once was fun to say that I did it but really not all that interesting second time through and I'm sure by my third play through I'll be using the console for it... That being said what I'd like to see is blacksmiths that generally just sell iron and steel weapons (and skyforge steel for Eorlund) and nothing pre-enchanted. In order to get higher level equipment you have to find smiths that can work the appropriate materials and YOU have to bring them to him (and with all of the great weapon and armor mods out there you can even give each smith their own style). The same with enchanting... you bring the item and soul gem to the enchanter and for a modest fee he enchants the item. Most enchanters have the basic enchantments, others can learn enchantments from things you bring them (possibly giving you a discount on future enchantments since you are broadening their offerings). For very rare enchantments you have to find very reclusive mages and possibly perform services to get them to work for you.
Saratje
I saw several people suggesting the exact same idea, so I'm pretty sure it's wanted enough for people to work on this sometime soon. If I may add a nice idea, perhaps there is a timer of 48 hours until your item is enchanted/improved, after which a courier will bring you the item the moment you enter one of the big cities. :)

Axisdeath
I wish Skyrim still had durability damages :( It's been so long, was that in oblivion? It should have been in skyrim to add more use to the forge.
