An FPS Treasure Find!

I came across a little bit of information and it was well worth it. FPS gain and I will explain. Obtaining the NSVE file I found out I wanted to have the 4GB fix and the NSVE to run. So, it did not occur that I need the regular NSVE file and the NSVE4gb file to make it all work. When installed properly you will have an NSVE folder in the New Vegas root directory.

The NSVE folder (when NSVE is installed) in the New Vegas root directory it will create inside of it a Plugins Folder. This Plugins Folder is where the New Vegas Stutter Remover.DLL goes.

When you start a game you save and exit the game and an INI file is created. With that said, go to the NSVE plugins folder and inside is the New Vegas Stutter Remover.INI. Inside the INI file is a bfastexit option and you set it to 1 (1 for ON) as 0 is for off. This allows for a really fast clean exit from New Vegas.

On to the FPS gain.

The Stutter Remover INI has a MaximumFPS option and it has a default of 30? I guess this is to keep low end machines from processing to much FPS? I changed the value to 60 just to see what would happen and WHAM...my FPS climbed. Now it only climbed about 5 FPS in the main 3D rendered game play...but hey 5 is nice added bonus. When I use the Pipboy or a scene that does not have much 3D intensity to it, it rockets to 60FPS. Now I know why I was only getting a max of 30FPS which I disliked. I thought it was a nice find.

Agreed, agreed and agreed.

4GB and NVSR are a wicked one-two performance punch. A total boon when running lots of hi-res textures.

Kinda like you said, I think NVSR is set at 30 default because the idea is to smooth out FPS highs and lows, not specifically to boost FPS per se. But, yeah, if a rig can handle it, increasing that setting in NVSR ini like you said can really ice the cake. (I can't recall exactly, but I think putting that setting to zero removes the cap completely.)

I am adding another find for FPS increase. I am using New Vegas Configator and I have been playing with the setting. I have quite a few mods loaded and it is intense but looks great. I capped it at 40 and I was bogging down into the 10, 17, 23, and it seem to bounce in areas with a lot character NPC ready to do battle or land that was really intensive with buildings and such. I read and looked after reading that shadows don't play a big part in the the game. Your character, NPC, monsters and animals seem to display shadows. Buildings do not and I don't think plants to either. So, I knocked shadows back but still had the bogging. It was only one setting that actually made a difference for me anyway. That setting is "Shadow Fade Distance". Since shadows don't play a big part in the game, I decided to turn it down quite a bit in the distance, so I set it to 150. I like sniping in the game and after seeing numerous monsters (like 10+ sometimes in one direction who knows the other directions) way off in the distance it made sense that the game was probably rendering shadows on them even though I really could not see them. I now keep a good 20+ minimum FPS and going up to 30+ more than I used to and I still have shadows up close where I can actually seem them.

Another new FPS addition to the ones listed above. Like I said I have a lot of mods loaded with some high end textures. When I fast traveled from one location to the next it seemed to really bog down. I mean heavy bog down in some areas like inside with 5 plus people walking around I would get like 7 FPS for a few...then it would climb to 13....then maybe about 23 FPS and back down to like 15-17 FPS. I just kept searching and reading but really not finding anything that would help. I pretty much have all the major tweaks listed and have applied the ones above just by finding or trial and error.

I am using "New Vegas Configator" and I read many different opinions on "Use Hard Drive Cache". One fella stated that this was strictly a setting for the Xbox 360 / Sony PS3. I am not sure if true or false but I gave it a try and seemed to make things worse. I have 2 500 gig 7200RPM hard drives. One of these is used for the extras cache / virtual memory which really helps out in Windows and I recommend if you can put an additional one in. You can read about it by doing a search in Google as it is quite popular.

Back to the my point and FPS tip. Since it seems that the "Use Hard Drive Cache" did not work, I decided to look at the "Preload Size Limit"...again you can probably see this in the .ini file, but I am using "New Vegas Configator as it is easy to make and try setting to see if it will work or not.

"Preload Size Limit" per the "New Vegas Configator" meaning is and I quote here = "This limits the amount of game data that is preloaded. Fairly small amounts are enough; it isn't used for storing all the game data".

I started with 50 then increased to 100 but did not bother going over that. Then I tried 150, 200 (As I saw a difference), and then just plain maxed it out to 223. 223 is the max on mine, unsure if anyone else will get something different.

When I play now there is WAY LESS load time and I don't see the 10-15 for any length of time like I did before. This made another huge impact on how fast it loads for me. Again, I am unsure if you need an extra HD for this or more ram as I have 4 gigs of ram to use, but it worked. I also don't understand the definition above as it really helped me out.

Give it a try it might help you as well?

After playing New Vegas for quite awhile I am here to report the above "Preload Size Limit" made a very positive gain in how smooth it runs. Like I said above I have a 6870 with 1 gig, 4 gigs of Ram, and a extra Hard Drive for cache / virtual memory and I am unsure if any or all play a part in this. Edited by Delfs1970
