whytebyrd
I have been told that it must be a "browser thing", but for the life of me I just can't figure out what it is. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, with IE9, more or less straight out of the box ( I downloaded Java also). This is the only site I have this problem with. ALL the Nexus sites, I should say, not just a particular game Nexus. I have downloaded files with Firefox, that show up as zip, rar, etc., but I really don't like using that browser much. I thought that I should ask you guys, rather than Windows, because 1) I might get an understandable answer that actually focused on my problem, and 2) surely I'm not the only one using IE9 that runs into this problem on your sites. bben46
First guess is you have somehow changed the file associations for things like compressed files -as that is how mods are transmitted - look for file suffixes like 7z, zip, rar, They should be what you get - they are not runable in that form and have to be uncompressed - that's one of the things that a mod manager may do for you. To change the file associations see this linkhttp://windows.micro...uses-by-default Here is a short list of the program types to look at7z, rar, zip, winzip Follow the list and find all of the compressed file formats and change them to zip (or whatever 3rd party unzipping program you use ) I use the FREE 7-zip - it is absolutely FREE - no conditions, no spyware, no nag screen no toolbar downloads and it is even available right here on theNexus. And when you install it, it asks if you want to change these file associations to work with 7-ziphttp://tes.nexusmods...le.php?id=15579
whytebyrd
Yes, I am aware of the compressed file types & use an unzipper utility that handles 7z, zip, rar,, etc. I have downloaded many, many mods for different PC games from different sites, (fileplanet, planetelderscrolls, damodder, etc., etc.), and at all other sites, the file I receive at the end of the downloading process is the correct type. I use the exact same browser (IE9) and download manager for all of these.Only from Nexus sites do I receive php files. It was only after I had fished around for answers on other forums that I received an answer indicating that a different browser might have success at this site. Therefore I downloaded the latest Firefox & installed it as an alternate browser. When I use Firefox, the downloads are presented in the correct form. I don't like Firefox as a browser, however & my bookmarks & whatnot are all messed up when using it. I have never done anything whatsoever to my IE9 browser configuration since I installed Windows 7 (and it's components) on a brand new built from scratch computer. Am I really & truly the only user of IE9 who has this problem? I did submit a question on this topic at the Windows help site, but basically was told I needed to talk to people here. This may not be exactly a life or death problem but it is very irritating & I don't have a clue how to fix it. If it was simply a problem of not having the right file-type associations, why does everything work just fine at other sites?
bben46
Interesting question, I don't know. It works for me on IE8, IE9, FireFox, WaterFox (64 bit Firefox) Chrome, Comodo Dragon (a variant of Chrome). I don't use Opera, but those that do report it works also. And several other lesser known browsers. I think downloading as php shows that it is downloading the page from the internet that contains the data on downloading the mod, and not the mod itself. Hopefully some other IE user will have a better answer.
Thandal
As an IE9 user, (including IE9 Mobile on my WP7 smartphone) I don't have this problem. Not sure where the issue arises, but when the download window opens in your browser you can change the way the file is stored using the "Save As" option. You can see the original filename/type on the mod page, and can then name your download appropriately.
whytebyrd
Just thought I'd put a little closure on this topic... I finally found out what the problem was. It was related to changes in my browser that a download utility had made. The changes remained even after I had uninstalled the download manager (one of my early attempts to solve this problem). I just recently installed a new & improved ( ) accelerator/manager and it has apparently straightened out whatever kinks, browser-wise, that I had inherited from the earlier app. I still have no idea what the culprit app actually changed, I must have looked at every single choice available in the "internet options" tree that IE has. NOTHING worked! Just one more of those little blessings of technology, I guess...
