New meshes for character race?

Hi,*

Can anyone out there with experience in modding give me some help with something?

I've been playing around with 3ds max lately and wanted to try and make a new playable race. I've always thought a playable ogre race might be interesting but I wanted one that looked like an ogre. I was thinking about adnd style ogres or trolls. Very powerful and heavyset. I noticed in the CS that you can specify meshes for all the head parts but you can't specify meshes for any of the body parts (just textures). Am I correct in assuming that all character races use the default meshes in the _male directory? If that's correct, does anyone know if there's any way around that?

I guess one approach would be to "equip" another body mesh. The same type of approach as most of the lich mods. One of the problems is that you can't equip any armor because all the body slots are used by the replacement meshes. Would it work to create custom armor meshes that would replace the already equipped body meshes. Any skin showing through would have to be part of the armor mesh. Obviously this would mean not being able to wear any armor in the game but that could be a challenge in playing a race with an unusual size or shape.

I've been playing around with modding and character creation on my own, but I don't have enough experience with this to know if all this is possible. Anyone out there have any opinions that could help?

Thanks

Doug

haha, of course you can ;)

you just have to set the meshes in the CS.

thats why khajit have different heads than imperials, and argonians have different heads than orcs.

i personally use 2 body mods, but there are a few clipping issues.

Hi,

Hoplaa, thanks for the links. Looks interesting. Evilkoal, thanks, but the head meshes aren't the problem. That's the easy part :P It's the body meshes I'm trying to change. Just seems very frustrating that you can do pretty much whatever you want when it comes to creatures but you're limited to all character races having the same parts below the neck.

Thanks

Doug

I believe there are some mods that allow you to play a monster (werewolf to mention for one) and I think they use custom armor meshed and textured to look as they want it. This may be the easiest path for you to take. There is another mod I can recall that allows you to play a demon race and when activating it's powers, you transform partially in a different form. The legs, they used armor meshed, textured and scripted to simulate the transformation of human to umm, goat? legs.. lol, can't remember now.
