Right, so you've made an account and downloaded a mod file.

Usually, mods are compressed in .7z or .rar file archives. You'll need to decompress the files to get at them. To do that, get a program such as 7-Zip. Most alternatives are shareware.

Once you've installed the program, open the compressed file you downloaded. You should be shown the files and folders that the archive contains. You need to extract these files into the right place.

To do this, click Extract, and select a location for the files to be extracted to. You'll want all of the files to go in your Oblivion/Data folder. So if the first folder you see when you open the file is Data, you'll want to extract to your Oblivion folder, and if it's Textures/Meshes/Sounds/whatnot, you'll want to extract to your Oblivion/Data folder. Select "Yes to all" if asked if you want to overwrite.

Now start the Oblivion Launcher. If all of the files are in the right place, you should be able to select "Data Files" and tick the boxes that correspond to whatever mods you want to play. The mods just tack on to Oblivion.esp (the main game file - make sure to keep that enabled, or nothing'll work at all).

The mods should work at this point. If you can't be bothered with this, many mods have alternative "OMOD" formats that can be used with the Oblivion Mod Manager to self-install. Even if you aren't thinking of using OMODs, I suggest you download both the Mod Manager and Wrye Bash, as both have some very useful functions. But neither are essential to play mods.

I have a set of short tutorials for people who have never worked with mods. It starts with how to download, how to unzip (with a link to a very good free unzipping program - 7-Zip) and a small test mod located here on the tesnexus for you to practice on. And how to install the mod how to get it into your game and some troubleshooting. I am working on some more advanced tutorials to help with more complicated problems.

If you are interested, click on the highlighted text to be taken to the start.

Please leave me some feedback. Thanks
