Two repeatable crashes - anyone if it can be tied to any of these mods

So I'm getting 2 repeatable crashes:

 

1. When entering Riften for the first time. I've persuaded the Guard shaking me down to back off, he goes and unlocks the gate. I go in, get to loading screen and... CTD. Curiously, the loading screen is 'blank' - it's just swirling smoke at the bottom, no picture of a monster or item and no text.

 

2. When getting near Saarthal (barrow for early Mages College quest, class with Tolfdir). I've tried approaching from Winterhold and from the south west. Both yielding CTDs.

Now, I could disable those mods one by one until I can get in to Riften or near Saarthal, but I'm hoping that one of you knowledgeable chaps can see anything that jumps out as suspicious. I've already tried loading the save game without Populated Cities and Mjoll Facelift mods, so I don't think that they're the culprit. Any help or tips would be appreciated.
