3rdtryguy
I'd like a mod that lets us use the bottlecap press in the Sarsaparilla factory to convert the Sierra Madre gold bars into a whole bunch of golden botlecaps, ( about 200 per bar ) and these caps should be worth about 50 regular caps each. Selling them as curios would be okay, but being able to use them like regular money would totally rock, too. Gold caps would be nifty, weigh less in hardcore mode, and would be easier to convert into regular money. If the cap press has already been wrecked in the Crimson Caravan quest, a high repair skill of 80 or so should be able to fix it. Then a script to "use" it would remove 1 gold bar from inventory and replace it with 200 gold caps.
Gribbleshnibit8
Doesn't activating the bottle press bring up a message box? I ask because I've never made it to that quest. If so it'd be pretty easy to change it to work this way. It would be kind of cool to have more uses for gold bars, but turning them into 'real' caps wouldn't really be possible. They could probably be made as a currency, so they have the same value all the time though, like NCR and Legion money. However, I'm not sure if gold would weigh less than steel (it doesn't, btw). Though, I wasn't aware that caps had weight even in Hardcore mode. I can probably make a mod for this this afternoon.
3rdtryguy
I think that caps have weight in Hardcore, but I'm not really sure. If so, this would solve a big problem. Anyway, YES, the bottlecap press does indeed pop up a message box when activated. Finally, a SM bar weighs 35 pounds but is only worth 300 caps in bar form??? This mod would fix THAT, too, as the cap value would be much higher.THANKS!!!!! This is bound to be popular!
Gribbleshnibit8
So, after a ton of calculations and going ultra hyper realism on this puppy, I come up with a 35 pound gold bar yielding 2800 gold caps (at approximately the same volume of material as a real bottle cap), with a combined value equaling that of the gold bar at 10359 caps, means that each gold bottle cap would wiegh 0.0125WG and be worth approximately 3.764 caps apiece. Now obviously this isn't practical at all, from an economic standpoint. Gold is what was supposed to back the NCR dollar before all their gold was irradiated/destroyed. In that case, the gold bars would be far more valuable to the NCR or the Brotherhood for their manufacturing implications (such as conductors, etc). So really this mod would be impractical  But don't fret, for I have a solution. You said that the new caps could be more novelty items. In this vein, why not make them a bit rarer. So instead of 2800 gold caps per bar, we'll instead make each one make 527 caps. This makes each gold cap worth almost exactly 20 regular caps. However, this will bump the wight of a gold cap up to .0664WG each. But that still comes out to weighing almost exactly the same as the gold bar that went into it. Now for the real stuff. I've worked this out to check if the quest has been completed by destroying the machine. If you did, it'll make the machine usable again, and then open a dialog for a repair check (80 Repair). If you pass, then it 'fixes' the machine. Once fixed, any subsequent activation will open a crafting menu (more extensible than a script). The crafting menu will allow for the creation of regular caps by the 25 each for 1 scrap metal. No other input is required, because we'll just assume that the parts are already in the area, since they were making them there anyway. Also, because otherwise you'd have to have 4 paint guns and other items to make just 100 caps (not practical). To make gold caps you need a gold bar, and that's it. One gold bar yields 527 gold caps. Easy as that.

3rdtryguy
So.... any progress on this? Did it turn out to be as easy as hoped?
Cyberlazy
Caps do not have weight in hardcode mode.
betto212
anyone here watched duck tales , there is one episode that a country with no money start to use bottle caps as money ,and more rare caps worth more than more commom caps. something like this would be interesting nuka cola quantum bottle cap = 100 common caps or 1000 common caps this would make the currency a little more usable with realism mods. Ruadhan2300
I run the game with a mod which gives bottlecaps a realistic weight :) I went and googled how much a real-world bottlecap masses, then set the mass to something comparable.Result, I can't carry all my money, too heavy :PIt's one of those mods I add to whenever I'm bored/have a reason to. where I research the real-world mass of an object, then set the ingame mass to that. most if not all of the misc items in the game now have mass, even quest items, and I've tweaked items that seemed either too heavy or light for what they are. I'm ignoring armor and weapons since a lot of mods mess with them already and I'm avoiding mod-conflicts :P
senterpat
Look up the mod "treasures of the wastes" they have gold plated caps and I'm sure you could ask the author to add that script to the bottle press.
