nicholasdwebb
Hello all, I am currently working on a project that utilizes the AWKCR color and decal swap slots to easily change the vault suit textures and number decals. So far it includes the Proto Vault Suit and Vault Suit Recolors. The proto vault suit can be installed alongside my mod and it will just use the Proto textures without messing with the files. The Vault Suit Recolors author gives permission to reuse his textures, so I'm just repacking them into a folder structure that my mod can use. There is another mod I want to add, HexCamo Vault Suit. Because of the way it is packaged, I can't just ask users to install it alongside my mod like the Proto Vault suit, and the author doesn't give general permission to reuse the textures like Vault Suit Recolors. The author (Reelo2228), has been inactive since 2016, so I don't think he will respond to my request for permissions. I'm a new modder, so I apologize if this topic has been covered already, but I couldn't find a clear answer in the forums. Maybe I was searching for the wrong thing? Anyway, my question is this: what is the protocol for using content created by an inactive mod author? Is it just off-limits, or is there a point where it becomes free to use? Can someone besides the author approve it? Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. I've included a couple of pictures of what the mod does so you all can see how I would like to use Reelo2228's work: http://imgur.com/gallery/ErcuB
nicholasdwebb
Update: He actually responded like 5 seconds after I posted this. Sorry about that!Anyway, if anyone has any other advice about the mod itself or other texture packs I should consider, I'd love to hear it. Since you are planning to use the AWKCR Color Swap architecture which came from UCO originally can I ask that you label your swaps visually with a suffix so that users who are using multiple mods that add swaps for these suits know which swap comes from which mod? UCO already includes a bunch of basic and novel swaps for vault suits which all have the suffix [uCO] after each primary, secondary & decal swap that comes from it so if you could include a similar notation it will likely save a lot of confusion down the track regarding which swap comes from which mod. The only other request would be to align the use so that Primary Swap is the main color (blue on a default suit), Secondary Swap is the trim and Decal is obviously the suit number or other logo. I hadn't thought about adding the suffix, but that makes sense. And at the moment I'm using the primary swap for both the main color and the trim and the decal for the number/logo. It might be cool though to add some options for the trim in the secondary slot. Edit: I just added the trim options. It's actually pretty cool, and greatly expands the options available to the player. Thanks for the suggestion!
