Detecting the player opening a container before it opens?

I already figured out what I need to do to get the effect I'm after, which is the modification of a container's contents prior to the container menu opening. Unfortunately, my current method involves attaching (or changing preexisting) scripts to containers in the game. A lot of scripts for a lot of containers. Seems to me if I can get this to work with a single script running in a quest, that might be a less obtrusive way of going about it.

 

If it can be done, that is.

Far from an expert on this, but I would ask what determines the change in contents? Without knowing specifics I would say the chest could change via a Trigger Script the Player entered around the Container.

 

I have sort of managed to get what I was after with event handlers. It's for a mod that I've been putting off for far too long. Really surprised nobody has made it yet.
