How to troubleshoot broken animations?

I've been meaning to see what I can attempt towards fixing a couple of things about the player character's animation which have always bugged me. They are:

 

1: The running animation is a little slower than the speed of the ground passing underneath.

2: Turning left or right with a mouse produces a foot placement animation (albeit too slow for the rate of turn). Doing so with a control pad just causes the player character to go stiff for the duration.

 

This is one of those cases where I don't even know where to begin, at least for the second item. There doesn't seem to be any flag or whatever dictating that certain animations will break when using a pad.
