SanitarySan
okay so i am a medium experienced moder but i think i messed up this time, in part one 1 i was having trouble getting my mods to work after i deleted everything for a fresh start, i deleted everything (absolutely everything, as in i did an advanced search and deleted everything that had to do with mod manager or fallout 4) upon re-downloading the game mods were not loading in properly do to what i imagine was a problem with the .ini files. for part 1 read https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/6005063-modded-to-death/ but to sum it up my game is broken as f*#@ now the main problem is the game won't even start i can start up the launcher but it just black screens and backs out to desktop. tried verifying integrety of systems cash, i don't have mod manager loaded yet, there should not be any mods in the system but i don't know for sure, any ideas??? Gilibran
When did you download the game? A new update was released yesterday and some mods need to be updated to work with the new update. Most importantly F4SE needs an update, that could well be the cause of your crash. There just might still be something left in your folder when you deleted before re-installing. There is really no reason a completely clean vanilla FO4 should not launch. Try the forum and search for the 1.9.40 files download and install them to see if that helps. It will rollback your version of the game, Beth might just have screwed up the update.

SanitarySan
update: i have isolated the problem to either the fallout4prefs.ini, fallout4custom.ini, or something with the initial setup of NMM. i added [Archive]bInvalidateOlderFiles=1sResourceDataDirsFinal= to the fallout4custom.ini andbEnableFileSelection=1 to the fallout4prefs.ini so as far as i can tell they should be working fine so i'm guessing it's a problem with the NMM setup? i don't know usually i know how to mod and stuff but this problem has had me confused for the last 5 days... jones177
NMM mainly manipulates the AppData\Local\Fallout4\plugins.txt file. This file is your mod list & load order. The esp mods with the stars in front of them are recognized by the game. NMM & even Loot can sometimes trash this file & things stop working. NMM usually messes up if you add lots of mods at a time. What you do when you reinstall them. It is best not to uninstall the game if you have problems. Its structure is elegant & simple to fix. NMM is not elegant & sometimes needs to be uninstalled/reinstalled. What I do to prevent external programs, Bethesda & me from trashing my game is to save the entire game along with the AppData files & the Documents\My Games\Fallout4 files on an external HD. I do this every time the game is stable. This saved me from the CC update tragedy. This is also the best way to reinstall a heavily modded game if you decide not to play it for a while or your HD/SSD crashes. I recently did this with the original Skyrim. After the Steam install I copied all the above mentioned files back & the game that I modded every weekend from 2011 to 2016 is back in it's full glory. The best quality for a modder to have is perseverance. You have it so you will do fine. Later

jones177
When your game is thoroughly trashed you need to go vanilla. Go to the AppData\Local\Fallout4\ folder & move the plugins.txt file to a temporary folder. The game will make a new one when it starts. Go to the Documents\My Games\Fallout4 & move the inis to a temporary folder. The game will make new ones when it starts. Check your game data folder. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\data make sure that you don't have an interface folder, mesh & texture folder. If they are there move them to a temporary folder. Make sure there are no ENb/Reshade dlls/inis in the Fallout 4 folder. Make sure the Steam app is not locking up. That can prevent the game from starting as well. If the game starts make a new character. Assume your old saves are trashed for now. Later
