Help diagnosing a CTD on opening random containers

Usually the game will crash the moment I press E. Sometimes I get a glimpse of the container menu before the crash happens (I haven't spotted any unusual items, or ones related to a particular mod). In one case (a dead Draugr) I could view the inventory, but the moment I moved the mouse or pressed an arrow key it would consistently crash.

I've tried disabling every mod I can think of that adds items, Wrye Bash's bashed patch, and all interface mods, but the crashes persist. Most containers are fine, but the ones that do crash will always crash. However I've found that when going back to older saves for testing, the crashes when looting dead creatures would sometimes fix themselves. So I'd load a save right before a fight, kill the creature and loot it, and the game would consistently crash; but if I loaded a save from the start of the dungeon -- same cell, creatures already spawned, presumably -- it would be fine. Broken containers remain broken no matter what. So maybe I'm actually having two separate problems? :/

Affected containers have included: A random dead Skeever (the others in the same room were fine), a random dead Draugr (ditto), a burial urn, and a large sack.

Here's my load order. I'd be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Or maybe there's a known issue with some mod that I'm unaware of?

Edit: It's gems. Any gem will crash the game if I try to view it. If I add a gemstone to my inventory using the console and then try to open the "misc" tab, I get a CTD. Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Also, is there some way to change your thread's title short of, like, reporting yourself and asking a moderator to do it? :huh:

Edit: It's Distinct Interiors. Which seems bizarre, but there you go. On a new game with nothing enabled but Distinct Interiors and Alternate Start, gems will reliably crash the game. If I disable Distinct Interiors, the problem goes away. vov

Glad you got it worked out. But this just seems bizarre to me. How did you diagnose that it was Distinct Interiors? By disabling everything, and then enabling one-by-one? Did you ever enable the log in Skyrim.ini to see if it tells you what was causing it to crash?

To enable the log, add these lines to Skyrim.ini

[Papyrus]
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0
bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1

The next time you crash, a folder will be created in C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Logs\Script. Inside will be a bunch of .log files. The most recent one will contain your crash info. When viewing the files, it helps to use a program like Notepad++ so everything is formatted correctly. If you use Notepad, it will be a jumbled mess, difficult to read. All entries are timestamped, so you should see what happened right when the crash occurred.

Of course, this doesn't always state the cause of a crash, so it's not a perfect solution, but it can be helpful.

Please don't spread this old myth. Skyrim doesn't have crash logs. The Papyrus log files tell you absolutely nothing about the cause of game crashes. They simply record messages (including errors) from the scripting system. When a crash occurs Papyrus is one of the first things to die so there's absolutely no way for it to tell you something about the crash. And worse yet turning the scripting logs on slows your system and is more likely to make your system crash. They only time you should have Papyrus logging turned on is when you are debugging scripting problems.

Is this information published anywhere, like in a guide, excepting apparently in the minds of people that know better? I obviously thought it was a thing, since I've read about it here and there, on various places online, like this article. While it's true that that person doesn't necessarily have more knowledge than some other Skyrim user, having it presented it that way lends more authority than some random forum post. Such is the nature of the internet.

I learned something, so I thank you for that, but I wasn't intentionally spreading misinformation.

Yep. I decided to brute-force it because I was out of clever ideas. Fortunately Distinct Interiors was near the top of my load order, or I would still be at it. I agree that it's bizarre, but I can reliably reproduce the crash and haven't had a single one since removing DI. I've reported the bug, maybe the creators will have an idea.

Years ago it was posted in the official Bethesda forums (that are now closed). There's information about the Papyrus settings in the Creation Kit wiki and there should be mentions about it in various sticky posts here on the NexusMods forums (but it's been so long since I've read those I can't point you to anything specific). The problem is that mis-information never seems to disappear and is always just a Google search away.
