Dawnguard Opening Quest

I don't know why it's now bugging me now, I've played Oldrim so many times I can't even count anymore. But in my last SSE play-through, I have been paying more attention to immersion and quest dialog more than i did in the past. And this opening quest is truly unbelievable...if not unacceptable. I am sent into Dimhollow Crypt to stop the vampires from getting an "Ancient Vampire Artifact". Ive just fought my way through the cave killing vampire after vampire to get to this artifact. So what do I find? An ancient vampire with an artifact. Welp, let's just throw the whole vampire hunter on a mission thing out the window.

 

"Hi , I'm a vampire with an Elder Scroll, Take me home and help me give this to my family so they can conquer Skyrim. BTW my name is Serana, nice to meecha."

 

"uhhh-........OK"

 

HUH??????????

Worse yet, Serana knows she was hidden away with that Elder Scroll so her father wouldn't get it but she heads straight back home with the Elder Scroll in plain sight. But then Harkon for some inexplicable reason lets her leave and take it with her again!

 

And on the the flip side to become a vampire lord you have to join the vampire hunting guild.

A believable start would have been something like a force greet. Like You touch (Activate) Serana's body in the monolith and she comes alive. She wakes up and and I would think she'd be in a frenzy to feed. Anyway, the 1st meeting between the 2 should have been hostile, but Lokil and more Vampires should not have been encountered yet and are still lurking around, Serana senses this and breaks off the fight and suggests a truce to get out of this..............

 

 

 

Or something along those lines.

There are quite a few possibilities for why it starts bugging you now.

 

I don't know how old you are but normally people tend to raise their expectations and standards when they get older. And then of course there's also the possibility that you've played some games with better story telling between Oldrim and SSE.

 

Personally I was never fond of Bethesda's story telling. Being 50 and having read quite a lot of good books in my live surely doesn't help to change that. In the past (pre Skyrim days) it was easier for me to dismiss, because there was always the possibility that technical limitations go hand in hand with shallow story telling and I really had high hopes for Skyrim. It's not only the Dawnguard opening quest, the bad story telling already starts with the opening scene of the main quest.

 

Whether it's books, tv series, movies or games, all of them have the same problem to start with. You can't tell a story without some sort of McGuffin. The challenge is to disguise it in such a way that the reader/watcher/player becomes emotionally attached and involved in it as quickly as possible. For me, the real bummer was when I finally managed to enter Dragonsreach without CTD and someone told me that for whatever reason I was the guy to get some old stone plate from a Barrow.

 

I followed the thread for a while, until I got bored after The Throat of the World and the fifth dragon attack on my way down (overusing "the epic moment" is a bad thing). Then I discovered Frostfall and spent about a week every day at least three hours (real life time) with surviving, camping, hunting, fishing, wandering the land, finding treasures, avoiding cities and annoying npcs as best as possible.

 

After that the whole game changed for me from "Skyrim - the epic story of the Dragon Born" to "Survival in the north, fighting Dragons and occasionally doing annoying tasks for weird people".
