Jake66664
I'm fairly new to the creation kit and I'm only using it for basic changes such as this, changing the default armor of guards in Whiterun. I'd like to have all the guards wearing the custom armor models that I've downloaded already (Witcher 2 Heavy Plate armor). I'm not really certain where I should start to get the best possible product. My first guess was to simply go into existing whiterun guard actor models and change their inventory default outfits to the custom armor outfit, but all the configurations in the inventory tab are greyed out, so I feel this is not the area I should be editing. If I could get some advice on how to produce this change it'd be much appreciated.
aarons6
something like this id just throw the witcher 2 plate armor meshes and texturs in your data folder replacing the stormcloak armor. that way they all get the new armor. that is if you made the whiterun guards stormcloaks. if not then i think they wear imperial armor. in the CK if you really want to make a mod, the guards use a template.. you cant change the armor in a template npc directly. you have to go down the list and change the master template.. the guards are like 3 or 4 deep.. they are based off the soldiers. EncSoldierImperialTemplate for imperials.EncSoldierSonsTemplate for stormcloaks but i wouldnt change them.. like i said id just replace the mesh and textures for the guards

Jake66664
/data/meshes/armor/stormcloaks/dara/textures/armor/stormcloakshmm...it's not there, I've also got a mod installed that gives stormcloak guards more diverse armor for each city, but I don't recall that it replaced any files. jet4571
Don't add the parts to the stormcloak folder thats a poor suggestion. Open the guard you previously looked at, dont touch the tabs. Look in the bottom left corner. There is the reason the inventory is greyed out. The guard is dependent on another for his inventory. Now find and open THAT guard up to change all the guards default outfit for whiterun at 1 time. Though if you did not create a new default outfit the guards will not wear the gear in inventory even if you make the default outfit none. So before you do any inventory changes go to the Outfits section, create a new one and add the armor parts into it. Do not put weapons in there, shields do go there. Change the guard with that default outfit and you should be good to go for every guard that depends on him for inventory.

jet4571
The dependencies can be cut anywhere. Uncheck the checkboxes at the one you want to be the template and his inventory will be changeable and everyone dependent on him will use his gear and everyone below him will not. So you would rather he create a replacer than do it properly? That is just WOW unbelievable. *EditCreating a replacer is the last thing you would want to do in a situation like this. there are mods that allow people to craft the guards outfits. Replacing them could turn away mod users because they have a collection of guards outfits or just really likes that one. Doing it properly replaces what the guards wear but leaves the original intact. This also would allow him to find the guards that watch the castle and change what they wear to the new gear making them more of an elite guard if he chose to go more in depth. Though i think that would require creating a new set of guards or changing the guard spawn marker to use only certain ones and remove them from the rest of the markers. but that is possible and a straight replacer as you suggested would make it impossible.
