Attempting Morrowind -- Again

I apologize if this isn't the correct forum.

Anyway...

Back in early 2003 Morrowind came packaged with my then new ASUS Ti4200 video card. I really didn't have a clue as to what type of RPG it was except for a few online readings. My experience was in line with the classic D&D RPG, so Morrowind was definitly a whole new world (with no pun intended).

To make a long story short, I didn't "get" Morrowind. In fact, I was a long, long, long way from finishing it before I uninstalled it. A major reason for doing so was because it was eating up way too much time. A second major reason was that I realized that I went off on a tangent meaning I concentrated solely of the Fighters Guild quests, ran all over the place exploring here or there and getting off on other tangents, realizing I never took character creation serious enough in the beginning or along the way, and I lost track of the main quest. I couldn't even remember how to get back to the main quest! A lot of this, again, had to do with my inexperience as well as misunderstanding the genius behind Morrowwind.

Just recently my sister-in-law purchased the GOTY edition for me for my birthday. I have done a great deal of reading on the game itself as well as texture packs and mods. I was oblivious to the modding community when I first played. While playing I always felt the game needed more vibrancy in clarity and color.

So, my central question is concerning visual texture packs that one "lays down" first and adds clarity and better color as well textures to the over all game especially the geography/lay of the land. Which one's do you recommend? I've looked at Vibrant Morrowind but the colors are a bit too much for me. I can't remember the other texture pack that places tress on the volcanoe, but that isn't what I am looking for either.

Basically, I want to keep the "feel" of Morrowind with that has better color, better texture rendering, and greater clarity. I appreciate your help. Thanks.

I'm not sure if I understood exactly what you're after, but there's a mod called "Morrowind Graphics Extender" that's supposed to make Morrowind look a whole lot better.

Ah. I got Morrowind with my graphics card back then as well... But without any instructions whatsoever. :pinch:

I would recommend Morrowind Graphics Extender, like paulmag said. I would also recommend "Better Bodies" by Psycodog Studios. It REALLY improves the default "Block Bodies."

But, what I would REALLY recommend, is playing through the whole game first WITHOUT any mods (Besides Expansions). It lets you feel that "Morrowindy Feeling."

Have Fun! :D

Cheers,

It never crashed for me. Well, maybe once every 1-2 months, but not on a regular basis.

I find the run kind if funny. ;D It doesn't really bother me that much.

It seems to like every one in Oblivion runs with "Baby Steps," so to speak.

That's it! Yeah, I used to get random crashes but all it took was a change in a file.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry if I wasn't clear paulmag. Let me see if I can clarify...

Adding texture packs and mods is something I have never done before because in my first go-around 6 or so years ago I didn't know about the modding community.

I do remember exploring almost all of the game minus Bloodmoon but I always wanted a better graphics experience. Thus my inquiry about a recommended texture pack that provided such an option.

gman021, please excuse my ignorance but what does the Morrowind Graphics Extender do/provide? Is it like the texture packs Vibrant Morrowind and the Visual Texture Pack? In other words, is it world inclusive?

Thanks again to all.

No it doesn't. It allows you to add HDR or Bloom shaders (though not perfect) to the game, as well as infinite view distance like in Oblivion. And some other things.

From a post I made a while ago:

Improving Graphics

Morrowind Graphics Extender

Connary's Texture Replacers'

Better Bodies

edit: Fit Body Textures for Better Bodies

Vality's Bitter Coast and Ascadian Isle Rainforest mod

Vality's Ice Caverns enhanced

Improving gameplay

Galsiah's Character Development. I never play without it. With this mod you don't have to worry about raising the right skills just to get that x5 to strength or whatever attribute multiplier again. It also adds magicka regeneration.

Creatures New monsters!

Less Generic NPC's Unique dialogue for all! Well, for the npc's in areas that have been finished.

Other stuff

Tamriel Rebuilt The first map of the mod that aims to add the whole of Tamriel is out! :)

The Connary's Texture Replacers link links to his released textures. If you want to see what is still coming or is being updated (almost everything), look here (Click the Thread 1 link for a complete overview)

For an overview of Vality's released and WIP mods: Link

Edit: I forgot! There's a new project: Morrowind Grass Project. It adds grass like in Oblivion. It's almost done.

I really appreciate the replies. I have two questions concerning Vality's works.

1. Am I correct in my understanding that his creations will work with other texture packs?

2. The screen shots I looked at all appeared dark. Is this the style of his work or is it brighter than what I was able to observe?

Thanks again.

1. Yes, Vality doesn't really do texture replacers. Usually it is a mesh replacer: the Ice Caverns replacer makes the ice shiny, which is done by editing the mesh, not the texture. The tree mods changes and adds trees, but is compatible with texture replacers. Vality's and Connary's work don't overlap, usually.

2. Could you show us an example of what you mean?
