Modding DDS in GIMP

I've gotten the plugin to load correctly and can load the dds files fine; but when i open them they are very hard to determine each piece (daedric helmet is essentially a jumble of crap that I don't know what is what without trial and error; is there a way to make the DDS file resemble the actual NIF file that I'm editing? Here's a link of what the daedric boots look like in GIMP; how in the hell am I supposed to edit this?

I'm not sure that I understand this. I've extracted the textures from the skyrim textures bsa.
