Grey faces / face-body color mismatch

Hey folks,

I thought I remember reading about this a while back but couldn't pinpoint where I did so here I am posing the question - any idea why I'm having certain NPC's with grey faces that don't match the bodies? I'm pretty sure it's more than just a 'dirty' face vs clean body mismatch. The mods I have that affect faces/bodies are -

No More Blocky Faces

Detailed Faces

Calient's Female Body Mod

Any idea what's going on and how to fix this?

I have similar troubles when I have the CBBE installed, but it affects men and women obviously so I am not blaming the CBBE. It is definitely not a clean - dirty mismatch. The game is apparently not loading the face textures. I find it easier to make them work correctly if I unload all body mods, run my mod as an esp as opposed to an esm and use the ctrl-F4 hotkey to export the face mesh and texture from the CK to the data files. However, when I convert the mod back to an esm, they go back to purple face. They also seem to go back to purpleface sometimes after I enter and leave the room several times. But only sometimes, not consistently. It's pretty frustrating, but I hope it is a bug Beth is going to fix at some point. They have acknowledged the problem. In the meantime, the next thing I am going to try is putting the structure of the mod into an esm and the NPC's into an add on esp. Edited by ch0k3h0ld

Hey Ch0k3h0ld, thanks for the response. Agreed that CBBE can't be blamed considering the male error as well. So you're saying it's a Beth issue? Is this something that is seen in vanilla Skyrim as well then?

So far it seems that you have to convert your esp to an esm using tesvsnip, then use your esm to export your face meshes and textures to a physical directory (alt+f4 as stated above) for your follower since followers all have their own unique texture folder it seems, also, the creation kit has problems reading the textures because female eyeliner becomes a tattoo, and mascara becomes a whole forehead thing.

Someone went so far as to include a actor creation tutorial with their mod, helped me eliminate the issue: Here there be fixes

Beth has acknowledgedd the issue, but it only occurs with NPC's that have been created, copied or modified. I've seen it using both the CK and the NPC Editor. It can also occur from using body mods and hair mods. Usually, if it is just from one of those mods, the fixes they offer, like the neckline fix for the CBBE, will fix the problem. But not when you have it with a player created NPC. At least not in my experiencec. From the odd error messages, it looks like the face textures and or meshes get lost or messed up somehow. That is why the export option will work sometimes, but it only seems to work with esp files. But then you have the navmesh glitch to contend with.

There is an interesting explanation with the Apachii Skyhair mod, where they say to export the face mesh and texture and delete the texture, but it didn't work for me. I've only tried to use Apachii Skyhair on my own created NPCs and it has not worked very well as I became obsessed with getting rid of the purple face and I couldn't do it at all with that running. After that, I was afraid to use it on Lydia.

On another similar thread, someone was saying to change the interpolation value on the skin tone from 1 to 0 or vice versa. I haven't tried this yet, but I am going to. I would love to fix this for once rather than just keep patching it.
