Escaping the DLC - story mod ideas?

One thing about so many Nv/F3 DLC's is that they basically "trap" you in the new dlc area. I found that time and time again, instead of wandering and casually exploring (something I normally love doing in these fallouts, especially in the face of new scenery,) I became obsessed with "escaping." It was almost a relief to escape. That's a real shame. The ruins of the Pitt, the scenery of Zion, the horror of Dead Money, I should have been "eating it up," but I weirdly became obsessed with getting out.

So I wonder if any of these plots could have been tweaked in some manner, that they weren't "prisons." Just places to hang out, explore, do quests, and go home as needed. Would they have been better or worse for it, if it had been done that way?

I'm not making any weird demands on modders, but merely musing on it for my own sake -- maybe someday I'll try modding in some story tweaks of my own if I get any ideas and it seems moddably-feasible.

Edit: Imagine, for instance, that the honest hearts caravan had been more successful, and then I was free to go home,or wander the canyons exploring and solving peoples problems as usual (by my own choosing, rather than out of necessity to get home.) I'm sure it's just my own personal bias and playstyle, but I bet I would have liked it more that way.
