Scripting troubles for quest

I have an activator that sends the player to different locations based on three "keys." I have multiple keys but depending on which three are used determines where you are sent. This is where im stuck, the activator works if i set it to the wanted quest stage in ck; where exactly im stuck is on what the best way to get the quest stage to advance as i place the keys. How can i script the containers to register what key im putting in and still trigger the event if i put it in again later for a different combination? If any of that makes sense.
