Trouble with reference images! PLEASE HELP!

Sorry this isn't really Skyrim-related, but I really need your help, guys!

I've been trying to find the solution to this problem I've been having for about an hour now. The thing is, I'm trying to create a 'reference image' in 3DS Max 2012 64x version, but I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I can put the texture onto the flat square object just fine, but it shows up in the viewport as tiled over and over, really small. I have to zoom in loads just to see the tiled texture. I've already tried resizing both the texture and the actual object in Max, I've even looked at loads of tutorials on YouTube, but still no luck.

If anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, or what might be causing this problem, PLEASE let me know!

I'd bet people can probably help you a lot better around here: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/forum/321-3ds-max/
