GPU help

Good morning.

First time posting, searched but didn't find what I was looking for.

I'm running fallout 4 on a new rig, my old rig bottlenecked at the cpu, new rig is fine, but I want better graphics now.

Old rig was Intel core2duo e8500 with 8gb ddr2 6400 and Radeon r7 250 2gb, which played at medium but bottlenecked at the cpu.

I came across a really good deal ($50) for a new tower, mb, CPU, and PSU...

AMD fx8350, 8gb ddr3 12800, and Radeon r7 250 from my old build, now it plays medium without any bottlenecking so far (haven't played much since I'm working on getting mods running again), but I want to run on high or ultra, however, my monitor only supports up to 1680x1050@60hz.

I want to stick with Radeon as it matches the cpu, but I'm not dead set on it, I really don't want to spend more than $100, but I will consider up to $150. Anyone have any idea what GPU would be the best match for my desires? I'm hoping for 40-60 fps, I started playing it on the old rig with a gt 730...so it's already alot better, but would like to use the new rig to it's full potential.

The term bottle necking is overused. Throttling occurs when when one piece of hardware processes faster than another. If you have an 8350 cpu and a gtx titan x, the titan will not be able to run to it's full potential, and so forth. If you want to stay in your budget, I would suggest a refurb gtx 960 4gb or the like. Perhaps an r9 if you prefer radeon.

With a budget of 100 - 150$ you would be looking at the following: (Fastest to slowest for amd and nvidia)

  • GTX 780 3GB (If you are lucky)
  • GTX 770 4GB
  • GTX 680 2GB
  • GTX 960 4GB

  • R9 290 (If you are lucky)
  • R9 280 / 380 (280 might be easier to find, basically identical to RX 380)
  • HD 7870

Of course you might always come across a very nice deal and get something faster for you money... if you can negotiate. The list above if more of a - should be very possible to get type - . Just browse all the sides you know (ebay, craiglist and what not) for them deal!

My recommendation: R280 or GTX770 (for max. 120$) . I for myself managed to get a hand on a gtx 780TI for 150€ -> ~178$. (As fast as a GTX 970 / RX 570)
