Many mods, Stable but compass and other issues

I Installed a large number of mods using this guide: An updated Fallout: New Vegas modding guide (12 February 2017)

It's a great guide and a lot of time went into it. Props go to Matt and the rest of Gopher's minions.

I believe i followed the guide to the letter with the exception of a few QoL mods that were no longer available, the substitution of Solid Project for AP and LP, and I installed the full New Vegas Reborn (as it is apparently now all one merged file).

I am still in Goodsprings but everything seems beautiful, new and stable. However, there are a few issues i was hoping to get help with.

1. The compass displays but does not move/track and compass markers are missing.

2. Occasionally, inventory screens do not display all items. Items will appear upon closing and re-opening inventory (minor inconvenience, unless it indicates some bigger problem).

3. Head and face gear give huge, stacking bonuses to health (current HP, not max) and DT/DR. For example, the recon Mask i found in Doc's house gives 300HP, 250 DT and 250 DR. A Face Wrap gives 500 HP. These are accompanied by effects in the pip-boy status screen labelled "2" or "3", etc. Is this an intended effect of one of the loaded mods? Seems unlikely.

4. Only vanilla face options are available at character creation.

5. Hardcore needs are not being implemented. Fields are blank and food, dehydration, sleep, etc do not seem to be kept track of.

I am hoping that it is all simple load order issues. Any suggestions on these issues or general tips on load order, alternate or complimentary mods, etc. would be greatly appreciated and i will buy a bum a sandwich in your honor.

Here is my load order, as set by LOOT:

You are using several HUD mods that need to be installed in a particular order, because they overwrite XML files they share in common. Please see the wiki "HUD-UI-Menu issues" article for details.

Under the assumption the plugins listed without numbers are actually still present, move any "inactive" plugins out of the game "Data" folder. They count against the "plugin cap" because they get loaded by the game engine if found, and can cause "Missing Master" problems. Please see the wiki "Missing Masters" article if you get that error message. If, OTOH, they are "fully merged and deactivated" by a Wrye Flash "Bashed Patch", then you are fine, but they shouldn't be showing up in your list either unless you failed to turn "ghosting" on.

I have skimmed the UI doc already. It is an excellent resource. Difficult for me to parse much of the info at this point, but I will dig deeper.

The game seems stable (no crashes, runs smoothly) and I haven't seen any missing master errors. The "inactive" mods are all part of a merged mod. I assumed that they need to be there as resources, but I don't know. I will look into Wyre Flash.

Thanks.

Finished "HUD-UI-Menu issues" and the contained linked docs. I'm sure the info i need is in there but i still can't figure it out. As far as i can tell all UI mods are installed in the correct order and overwrites seem correct. Perhaps a comprehensive "UI Menu Override" package would fix it, but not sure where to start there.

Am i correct that the compass would be defined by the hud_main_menu.xml file? That xml is currently being supplied by the oHUD Darnified Patch. Overwriting PN, DUINVv02, and oHUD. This seems correct. Am i thinking along the wrong path here?

You should use either one or the other of MO/WF as your "mod manager" to install and manage mods. But you can still use Wrye Flash to build a "Bashed Patch". The difficulty is that MO works from a "empty" Data folder. There is a video describing the process, and the STEP Guide instructions. (I used WF with Oblivion and stuck with it for FNV as a matter of personal preference.)

Here is my personal "UI Menu Override" file "readme", following DarnUIv04, Darnified UI - DT and DR-v1.1, PN, oHud plugins installed in that order:

This is the original "start_menu.xml" file distributed with DARNUIv04. It has been copied
into this separate package so it can be placed after the MCM package in BAIN, so the
DarnUI file will override that package. DarnUI itself should be installed prior to MCM, so
this is the only way to get it's version of this file to "win" the install order.

This resolves the MCM warning message "DarNified UI has been detected in the HUD but not the
start Menu. You will need to repair DarNified UI or remove it completely for MCM to appear
correctly." Using the DarnUI "start_menu.xml" file is the needed "repair".

Now contains other "overrides" as merged files to ensure compatibility with:
* MCM "menus\options\start_menu.xml"
* PN "menus\options\start_menu.xml" (identical to DarnUI version)
* PN "menus\main\hud_main_menu.xml"
* oHUD "menus\main\hud_main_menu.xml"
* WMM "menus\main\inventory_menu.xml"
* FlashlightNVSE "menus\prefabs\flashlight_battery.xml"

As a consequence, this override file should be installed last of the UI mods.

All I can say is it works for me.

Bugger. I am ashamed to admit it but the compass issue was due to not having the latest version of DUINV. Took special care to make sure everything from Nexus was up to date but neglected what i got elsewhere. Live and learn.

Still need to figure out the other issues. Would it be wise to make them separate posts?

And Dubious, thanks for the resources. Teach a man to fish...

It's your thread so you aren't "hijacking it" onto side issues. But it's best to try to deal with one issue at a time. Think of it like medicine: you need to triage the problems and deal with the most serious, widely affecting ones first. These are all fairly specific, so it's more your choice. OTOH, by splitting the issues up into their own threads, you give others the chance to provide their expertise in that specific problem, that otherwise they might skip over in this "more omnibus" thread. People tend to not bother when someone else is already responding. (I've never claimed to know everything. I just have more time and inclination to dig into questions and search the web than many others. But I play without a lot of common "beautification" mods like Body Replacers (older system), so sometimes I lack the practical experience.)

#2 "Inventory display" is a "HUD-UI-Menu issue". You have several Pipboy mods you should look into for compatibility. Either merge them or try "mod isolation".

#3 "Huge DT/DR bonuses" is probably a mod conflict. You need to isolate which mods are affecting those values and check their comment pages.

#4 "Only vanilla face options are available at character creation." Please see the 'Body Replacement Basics" section of the wiki "FNV General Mod Use Advice" and the 'Issue: Body Replacer - Custom Body Types' and related 'Body Replacer -' entries in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide articles.

#5 "Hardcore needs are not being implemented." Have you enabled this in "settings"? You also need to have installed the latest NVSE and JIP LN NVSE versions to get their fixes for several bugs in tracking those needs.

BTW: Do not use an "Auto-purge" mod for game play. (That was old advice from before we knew better.) They are designed for debugging by mod creator's only, according to the author of the JIP extensions to NVSE. See the 'Issue: CTD without warning, "Out of Memory error", or stops responding after the Main Menu', "Cause-2", "Solution-3" entry in the wiki"Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide for the game settings that do the same job.

You have a lot of "ammo" and "repair" mods. These are good candidates for merging to resolve "record level conflicts". You might want to see the wiki "Merged Plugin Guidelines for Personal Use" article, even though you obviously know how to merge.
