Not much to work with here. Did you install a new mod? Did you change something? Did someone else do something to your computer/game/?.

To help you, we need details. Was it working right before? Has it ever worked at all? A mod load list would be helpful, also, do you use OBSE or OBMM?

Dear bben,

Thank you for your interest(Kudos for you my friend :) !! ).

No, there are no tweaks-mods-managers or whatsoever. I just installed the game for the very first time, the first thing I would do was changing the video settings and normally the game wanted me to restart it but when i clicked "exit" the game crashed (or froze).

Then, when i tried playing it for the first time, I clicked "new game" and the same thing happened again, froze&crash. I hope you can help me out... :( :( :( :( :( :(

If your talking about Vanilla Oblivion no patch you might want to at least get v1.1 because original was crash happy though bben is right a little more info

Like is your comp up to oblivion?

Can you give us a rundown on your computer? Oblivion is very picky about hardware and refuses to run on some video boards at all.

CPU, Motherboard, RAM, Audio system, video board & video ram. Amount of free hard drive and anything else you can think of.

I have seen Oblivion crash because of a fragmented hard drive also.

And, Oblivion does not like to co-exist with other programs running. If there is anything running in the background it can cause a periodic crash. Some examples are defrag programs that run in background, some older HP printer drivers, Some Antivirus programs, Some memory managers. in short anything that takes attention away from Oblivion (its very jealous) Alt-tab to do something else will crash my game over 90% of the time. Xfire has been cited as a problem too.

Some early problems were fixed by the Bethesda patches that are available on their site Here: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_patches.htm

Be sure you get the patch for your language version - there are two English language patches - UK & US versions - they are different.

I play in windowed mode to prevent crashes from getting worse, but yea i do get crashing from exiting game. The only issue with this is that I use some mods, have it patched, and also have the unofficial mods with it... Maybe i should try to unload all the mods, then exit game to see if it is the main game thats corrupted.

Windowed mode actually increases the crashes. Windows is expecting you to be able to swap windows and puts in some more overhead for that.

Third party IM programs will cause crashes - Xfire & steam included.

Thanks to bben46, dra6on and S2RA (Kudos to you, friends :))

Im not very good at PC terms but Impretty sure my hardware can handle it:

-Windows XP Sp2

-Asus M2N-SLIDELUXE Motherboard (has an onboard soundcard)

-AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+

-2,0 GB RAM

-NVidia GeForce 8800GT

Note: I updated the game to v1.2.0416 English, restarted the PC and succesfully started a new game but when i tried to exit (and eventually crashed) and restarted the game, I again couldnt start a new game nor continue the existing one :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

I also tried shutting down every other program but still nothing.

BTW: When i first updated my computer (january this year) the game was working just fine. Later on, I uninstalled it and 2 days ago as you all know I reinstalled it.

Can the software-programs I installed in the meantime OR the fact that this is my 2nd time installing it may have caused this problem?? :thanks:

Your PC looks OK.

What mods are you running - a load order would help - the load list from the game data is not an accurate load order.

You may have to reinstall. However, before you do, read through this.

When you uninstall Oblivion it doesn't really uninstall everything. Then when you start adding mods before you have started the game, some things may not get initialized properly. Here is my recommended procedure for uninstalling and reinstalling.

I would appreciate any feedback on this as it is something I expect to post often and I hate to give bogus or useless information.

Reinstalling Oblivion

My instructions assume you are using Windows XP and have installed Oblivion into the default location. If you are using Vista or Linux, the file locations may be different.

For a full reinstall, first you should try to preserve your mods and save games. The easiest way is to rename the data folder where your mods are stored C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data to something else such as \olddata. Then rename the folder that has your saved games and Oblivion.ini, C:\documents and settings\your user name\my documents\My Games\oblivion to something like \My games\Old Oblivion - this saves your saved games and the oblivion.ini file.

Then, using the original CD, NOT the Launcher on your Hard drive. Select uninstall.

After it completes the uninstall, reboot your computer - this is important as it allows Windows to remove some references to the original Oblivion.

This would be a good time to do a file clean up and defragment your hard drive.

Now, again using the original CD, reinstall Oblivion.

Before adding any mods, patches or Shivering Isles, start the game and make a save. This initializes some stuff that needs to be initialized.

Now, If you DO NOT use Shivering Isles, patch the game using ONLY the latest Oblivion patch. All of the stuff from the earlier patches is included.

Be sure you use the proper language patch. If you use the wrong one it may work, but with a strange mixture of languages. (Germanglish?) Or it may crash.

NOTE: there are two English Patches UK & US and they are different. (Some people actually think we speak the same language) Use the one that matches your original disk.

If you use Shivering Isles, DO NOT install the Oblivion patch. Install Shivering Isles, then ONLY the latest Shivering Isles patch. All of the updates for Oblivion are included. There is only one Shivering Isles patch for both US & UK English

Now, again start the game and make a save. Test to be sure everything is working right (No purple objects or yellow blocks)

Before adding any mods, back up both your \data folder and the save game folder. Copy them, don't move or rename them, to a different folder - such as \Bethesda\Clean Oblivion\data and \Bethesda\clean Oblivion\saves.

Note, Your Oblivion.ini file is in the same folder, but separate from, the save game folder.

Now rename the \data folder to \newdata and the \oldata back to \data. this restores all of your mods. You should now have 2 data folders \data, and \newdata. Then rename the new My Games\Oblivion to something like \New Oblivion. and the \Old oblivion to \oblivion - this restores all of your saved games and your original Oblivion.ini file.

If you have the same problem, it is most likely caused by a mod. However, you now have a clean install to fall back on. You can rename the files back to what they were and be back to your clean install without having to reinstall again.

Sounds like lots of work, but you will have a clean install and a back up clean install when you are finished.

Dear ben, Im following your instructions NOW

can you please read my previous post again, I have edited it.

and once again: Oblivion is VANILLA: no mods or expansions, just the 1.2.0416 eng. patch

Edit: I did everything you asked me to do but the situation is still the same

When I start oblivion (after reinstall) i can play the game only once. After that, no matter what I do, I cannot load a n existing savegame nor begin a new game nor exit without crashing. Any solutions??
