Crashing when changing cells

Hi folks,

My game crashes frequently, especially when changing cells. If I am out in the wilderness it happens most frequently right after a save. In New Vegas/Freeside it happens almost every block change. IT happens least when tunnel running (WOP). Once it happens it takes many attempts to get back in, and many tines these are incomplete loads. I've found that if I first load a small cell--I keep a save in Gibson's shack for the purpose--I can then load the last save before the crash.

I've tried pretty much everything listed in the long crash page I found here. I'm as much looking for the reason it is crashing as the cure. I'm pretty sure it is memory related as the my memory never goes beyond 49% of my 8GB. I have the 4GB fix installed. What is not in that 49% is cache memory and a free portion.

I checked using Task Manager and FONV uses between 500 and 1100 MB of system memory during gameplay.

My system is a laptop with a Dual 2.4 MZ and an internal video card. It is attached to a docking station that I think uses my ram for video processing to push a 24 in monitor. But I can run Skyrim with no problem as long as I don't use too many animation mods.

I've checked my saves and they are all clean. I use FOMM and LOOT.

Here's my mod load order.

Thanks for any help.

PS I just read another post. I noted that this started happening after a large Win 10 update. Could be coincidence but...

Are you running Win10? Did you get the "Fall Creator's Update" (FCU)? Do you have "New Vegas Stutter Remover" (NVSR) installed? If all three are "true", then please see the 'Issue: Recent (post-Win10 FCU) CTDs after 10-20 minutes of play' (and other "heap size") entries in the 'Solutions to Performance problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

The other possibility that fits your symptoms is described under the 'Issue: CTD on interior/exterior/"fast travel" cell change' entry in that same article.

Dubious,

Thanks. I checked this as I was going to bed, but I had to try it. I changed the Stutter Remover .ini file: bHookCriticalSections to 0.

I then loaded 3 or four saves without jumping into my small cell first and all worked.

Now can you tell me what I changed and why it seems to work?

My interpretation of what is happening is that NVSR's "bHookCriticalSections" setting (0=off, 1=on) grabs (hooks) a low level part the operating system in order to make it's changes to the things that are under that "Critical Sections" portion of NVSR. Microsoft discourages that practice (messing around with low level OS functionality) in general except by using their approved API calls, and progressive updates have been tightening it's controls over OS components to prevent malware from doing that sort of thing. Apparently they finally got around to something that broke NVSR (or at least that part of it).

But that is just educated guesswork. I haven't dug into the code, and NVSR is not something most of us are up to modifying. That "fix" was developed by various people experimenting and determining that NVSR was the cause. Empirical evidence is that "it just works". Whether Skyranger-1 will ever get around to adjusting NVSR is an entirely different question. (It's been three years since the last update, after all.)

Hey all,

The fix to Stutter Remover worked. I have played a couple hours now without a single crash (although I did stutter a few times  ). All-in-all, I'll take the occasional stutter to crashing between every cell.

Thanks for all the help.

Oh god thank you so much for this! I was one more try away from uninstalling my modded game and that fixed it for me!
