Need help - nVidia Black Screens

Hello. I installed that mod when I ran into a black screen on the lowest level of the Anvil ship where you buy upgrades for the Thieves Den DLC.

I didn't go back so I don't know if it was fixed; however, I encountered another one inside of Unmarked Cave.

At the recommendation of LHammonds, I disabled HDR, but the graphics quality is better with it on. Now I have it properly Load-Ordered with FCOM Helper, but it doesn't fix them.

Does anyone have either settings recommendations, or perhaps a better mod for this problem? Any recommendations (other than "buy ATI") would be appreciated. :thanks:

80 GB worth of files, and Oblivion is the only uber-game that does this. ** sigh ** :(

  • 2 weeks later...

Not trying to bump an old topic here, but I have an 8600GTS running at stock cooling, and I too get these random black screens. I just started playing the game about a week or two ago, and I found a mod called "nvidia black screen fix.esp" but I have no idea how to use it. I have no idea how to set up mods or anything along those lines.

Can anyone help me out on this?

Yes. I got a lot of help from Kivan (creator of the unofficial OB fixes) on this. His latest UOP, install it, then install the 3.0.1 Hotfix. Also install the latest UOMP.

I'm running a 7-Series GeForce, so I had to delete the Cobwebs .NIF files (they were telling my card to do things it can't). Supposedly you don't have to delete them on 8-Series & higher (upgraded GPU coding).

You can also go to the Oblivion Mods Forum on Bethesda, and locate Wrye's topic on Wrye Bash. That utility has a "nVidia Fog Fix" you can run on mods that change interior cells.

Hope this helps you - I haven't run into any more black screens since I spoke with Kivan.

Running with an 8800 GS overclocked (xfx), drivers all updated, and while I don't run into total black screens, if I point my mouse in a certain direction, the screen will go completely black, though if I move my "head" (camera/mouse/whatever you want to call it) the interior cell with appear again. Black Screen Fix mod didn't help in the slightest.

Well, I was able to install that for myself, and although I don't think it fixed the problem perfectly, it has definitely minimized it.

Thank you all for your help.

Hi I've been having this problem too... the only thing is my screen doesnt go completely black, I still have a cross hair and HUD. I originally thought it was mods but I disabled them all and still get black screen at the beginning of the game (right after I make a character). Can anyone link to the fixes suggested above?

Sounds like you need to install Wrye Bash 182, and run the nVidia Fog Fix on all your mods that change interior cells. keep in mind that Wrye Bash needs other programs to work (WxPython & Python 2.5). A bit of a hassle, but no different than OBMM (which needs Microsoft .NET Framework) and Random's FCOM Helper.
