Is there a function to let the player type in-game?

I thought I had seen a way to let the player type in a text box in-game. I have what I think is a great idea, which is to make the player puzzle out a terminal password on their own and then type it. Any idea what function would bring up the box for typing, like when the player first types their name? Pretty sure I can handle the rest but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
