Quest NPC not opening dialogue?

So I have a simple quest and I am not sure where I went wrong, but I cannot make the NPC who gives you the quest open up dialogue. She is supposed to be a follower also and before I made the quest the follower part of her worked fine.

Can anyone give me some basic troubleshooting areas to look at? I know its sort of vague but I am new at this and not sure where to begin.

Ok, so now I got the follower portion to work, but the dialogue to open the quest is not appearing.

If its relevant here is the quest.

stage 0 - quest beginning

Stage 10 - NPC tells you to go find her sister who were taken by forsworn

stage 20 - player finds human remains

stage 30 - player tells NPC who agrees to follower player for revenge on forsworn.

stage 40 - quest ends

I realize there are many scripts to look at here and so, I was wondering if anyone could quickly take a look at what I have and advise me or fix it?

Hi Dan!

Did you record any sound for the dialogue? If you don't record something (silence works for some people; I have to record actual dialogue) then nothing will happen at all and it will seem like the dialogue is broken, even when it's been put together correctly.

Hey llama nice to see you around here :D

No I didn't record any voice dialogues. I knew it would make the dialogue go by really quickly and I expect that, but what I am getting is no options for it at all. So instead of being able to initiate dialogue that would go by in a second because there are no voice files, there simply is no option for the dialogue I wrote.

I have been trying a whole bunch of things and can't figure out what it is.

Yeah, I understand. I've started working on my Skyrim follower and the first thing I did was write some dialogue for her so I could get her following me, right? I didn't know anything about needing to record some silence for the dialogue at that point. So I go into the game and nothing. She won't talk to me like she should have been doing (no subtitles even)! I spent two days trying to figure out what was wrong. I started reading tuts and looking through threads. Even then, I recorded silence and she still wouldn't talk or respond. I finally, in desperation, recorded actual dialogue and then, and only then, did the dialogue work. Every time I add new dialogue to her, if I don't record voiced dialogue for it, when I go in the game, nothing happens. It's as though I've done no dialogue building. But, if I record something it acts as it should.

That's really bizarre, I didn't think that not have voice files would make the dialogue not show up at all.

Thanks llama I will try that later see if it works!

Hmm that is odd, i did not record anything and then i mean not the silence either. However this was a talking activator i used to let players switch banners in the house to something of their choice, can't read the reponse text, unless your brain handles nano-seconds, but it did not bother me, since it just have one purpose and the only text the player needs to see is which banner he wants to change to, but i have never experienced not getting the dialogue option at all, well i have but not because of missing recording. Could be that talking activators and normal npc's handles dialogues differently maybe?

When you made the quest, did you add follower scripts to the alias or the npcs itself?

You don't need follower scripts (The script that is attached to the followers dialogue quest or the one for the hireling quests don't control when and how a follower or hireling speaks. They control things like the waiting and following behavior of the followers and hirelings.) You need a GetIsID on your quest or your dialogue lines so that the game knows that your dialogue belongs to that NPC, but other than that, if you have set up the dialogue correctly in the CK it should work like dialogue has worked in the Beth editors in the past. You don't need scripts for dialogue to work only a quest to put the dialogue into.

It's quite possible that dialogue works for some modders without any silence recorded just like it works for some modders with only silence recorded and my dialogue only works if I record actual dialogue. The CK is a buggy mess and it gives different results to different modders (there are parts of the CK that crash for some modders but work for others). You only have to spend a couple of days at the Beth Forums reading in the CK Forum to realize it performs differently for different modders.
