Munk710
Hello, I am getting periodic crashes, about every half hour/hour of play or after several area transitions/fast travels. It is playable, but very annoying.I have T-Shooted to the best of my ability and can't figure it out. I am hoping that something in my load order or the included NVAC log will stand out to someone as a possible cause. dubiousintent
Please see the 'Solutions to "Crash To Desktop" (CTD) problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide. Unfortunately the NVAC log doesn't provide any clues. Check other logs such as those from NVSE. Please see the 'Checklist Item #4' entry in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide. I'm guessing the plugins in your "load order" without a "mod index" number are deactivated by the "Bash Patch". You should turn on "Auto-ghosting" in Wrye Flash and follow the the wiki "Bashed Patch file with Marked Mergeables" article. Move any "inactive" plugins out of the game "Data" folder. They count against the "plugin cap" because they get loaded by the game engine if found, and can cause "Missing Master" problems. Please see the wiki "Missing Masters" article if you get that error message. Otherwise I am not seeing any problems there. -Dubious- Edited January 15, 2018 by dubiousintent
Munk710
Thank you for replying.I just enabled NVSE logging and will edit this post with a log ASAP. As i said, i have done quite a bit of t-shooting. Separating my mod list into two halves, I have been unable to produce a crash with either half in more than two hours of play each (which is possibly diagnostically significant). As far as Auto-ghosting, i left the inactive/merged mods there so that my linked load order gives a better picture of what i have installed and i am nowhere near the mod maximum, so i figured "why not?". I have never seen a missing masters error, but i will ghost them in the future. Best practice is best practice. I have tried most of the basic suggestons in the "CTD without warning..." section. Perhaps i will play with my heaps tomorrow. I am at a loss for now. Dubious, you have said that you use an older rig when you play NV. Do you use an ENB? Is it at all useful when using low quality textures? EDIT: On second thought, i don't think anyone would want to pore through the 38,870 lines of the NVSE error log. dubiousintent
Re: NVSE log. Yeah, they can get kind of long. All you are interested in are the "error" entries. Most of them are "warnings" intended for the mod authors. Re: ENB. Tried it, decided this is a game instead of a movie, and the complications arising from attempts to make it look like one aren't worth the time spent wrestling with it. So the most I do for "prettifying" the game are the 1024x1024 VWD/LOD textures in NMC and Ojo Bueno with FNVLODGen. Good enough for me and my 22 inch monitor. I do use ENBoost however, because with 8GB of RAM ... why not; and it helps with the micro-stutter. Re: Auto-ghosting. Leaving the inactive/merged mods in your load order list for completeness is fine. Just wanted to be sure you knew about "ghosting" and that otherwise they count against the "plugin cap". Re: Splitting your mod list. Yes, it is significant that both halves have no problem. Strongly suggests the issue lies with the last/first plugins in each half. Or that you have too many plugins overall. Remember that the "plugin cap" is just a guideline. The exact mix of mods and art image sizes determine when you hit a system limit. 88 plugins should be well within the capabilities of most systems. More likely it's those two mods. However, the timing (after half an hour of play) is (in my experience) more indicative of exhausting heap memory or overheating. The game heap size defaults are conservative because of constraints for the XBox. Give those a try first. -Dubious- Edited January 17, 2018 by dubiousintent
Munk710
After installing ENBoost, i am happy to report that i can't seem to cause the game to crash. After 2 hours of play, followed by a stress test of repeated fast travels, the game remains stable. I have the new issues of a .5-1 second lag when opening Pipboy and a fairly frequent stutter, but these are minor inconveniences and I may be able to take care of them by disabling the DisableDriverMemoryManager feature, which i enabled due to my low end, on-board AMD video. I will test that later. If you have thoughts on that, they would be appreciated. Thanks again. Update: Disabling DisableDriverMemoryManager did not fix the Pipboy nor the general stutter. In fact, performance took a hit. Edited January 16, 2018 by Munk710
dubiousintent
I'm surprised that ENBoost solved your CTDs, but whatever works. "Stutter" and "microlag" are due to the game/video having to wait on "art assets" being loaded from disk into the video adapter to be rendered. The disk drive is orders of magnitude slower than VRAM. ENBoost uses some of the system memory (typically slower than VRAM) to act as a buffer between the two to speed up the process by caching some of those files prior to retrieval. There is a feature in Windows from version 7 onwards called "Superfetch" which tries to anticipate which files will be needed next and pre-loads them into memory. Some have found that disabling this feature actually speeds up their game performance and reduces stutter and lag. "File search indexing" is another to try disabling as well. Please see the 'Issue: Lag or "micro stutters" even with "New Vegas Stutter Remover" installed' entry in the 'Solutions to Performance problems' section in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide. -Dubious- Edited January 17, 2018 by dubiousintent
Munk710
The extra RAM utilization offered by ENBoost, maybe? Allows my system to handle issues that would have otherwise been too much to reconcile? I know that the DisableDriverMemoryManager function does wonders for me, but even with it turned off i am not seeing the crashes... Gift horse... I had already tried or have now tried all of the solutions listed in the "Lag or micro stutters..." section but for the outdated Radeon Pro app. I will give it a shot after researching it. But the game is playable now and, apparently, quite stable. I was even able to add my texture packs and a few other bells and/or whistles back in without a performance hit. I imagine that that closes this post.
