Best protocol for mod requests? Oh, and rusty weapons. ;)

So, I feel kind of bad posting here sometimes -- it feels like I'm doing the "do this for me," even when I try to be as polite as possible. Some modders really despise mod requests and do a "do it yourself, stop being entitled," while others love suggestions.
I don't want to offend when I make crazy mod requests but I feel like it's possible to come across badly, accidentally.

To illustrate my point:

I love adding more weapon mods to fallout, the more weapons, the better. ;) but as far as I can tell, the Commonwealth lacks the west coast's gun runners. My point then, is these apparently are largely pre-war weapons. For immersion's sake, I wish they usually looked, well, rusted, old, etc. But then, asking modders "make every non-faction (institute-made,etc) weapon and their potential modded parts look older" is sort of a crazy thing to strut in here and ask, even if I say please. And then, there's those big compilation modded weapon packs... I can only imagine the kind of work it would be to make them all look worn down.

Maybe instead we need to add a gun factory faction. ;)

But still, I can' t help but wish. ;)

I feel a little bad for telling you but you are right in that this is a "do this for me" request. This is actually a pretty nice little project to get your feet wet in modding yourself though.

You can accomplish all of this using free-of-charge tools. Learn how to make textures, how to replace and change the textures to a more rusty look yourself. You'll find that it's not exceptionally hard if you can operate an image processor like GIMP or Photoshop. Even crappy old Paint.NET would work. It will consume some time to learn how stuff interlocks but you'll be able to make more texture replacers afterwards and learn a good deal about Creation Engine in the process.

To start you off, if your game is set up for modding, you can just drop a loose texture file (Creation Engine uses .dds images for textures) in the Data folder, at the same spot in the folder structure where it would be located in Fallout4 - TexturesX.ba2. If you've done it right, it will replace the archived texture in game.

The best protocol to follow is if the modder hasn't asked for critique or says they are taking requests/suggestions, don't make them. A request can be 10 words long, but in reality the actual work required to do it would be 10hrs long. I understand that a lot of people who don't mod don't really understand the actual process of things, but it's better to learn yourself or post requests in the mod request forums to see if anyone is willing to take it on.
