less CTDs maybe none

Did a quick test on slightly modded copy (only few biggest graphic overhauls + intensive ENB) and on a heavily modded copy (~300 mods) with suggested .ini tweaks and with vanilla settings.. Increased the average FPS on both (51 to 57.5 on first and 36 to 40.5 on second).. Didn't test it enough to see if it reduced the amount of CTD's, but even if it only reduced stuttering, I'm happy.

Thank you OP :)

I rarely ever have a CTD but stutter was an issue occasionally. I didn't use the tweak posted here but used one from another fourm member named

yafi who shared this tweak and it fixed my issues.

1. Open skyrimprefs.ini (Documents > My games > Skyrim)

2. Look for, or create, the following four lines under [Display]:

fMeshLODLevel2FadeTreeDistance=

fMeshLODLevel1FadeTreeDistance=

fMeshLODLevel2FadeDist=

fMeshLODLevel1FadeDist=

3. Set each value to 10000000.0000, no higher, no less.

4. Save, close, and be happy!

This worked for me.....

I'm sorry but there is not Papyrus section in my Skyrim.ini file.

We are talking about the ini file in "my documents" right? I can't see such values anywhere. Where is it?

Yes, there isn't, but you can write it in manually. ;)

[Papyrus]

fUpdateBudgetMS=1.2

fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=1.2

fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0 ;Xenon and PS3 use 2000.0

iMinMemoryPageSize=128

iMaxMemoryPageSize=512

iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=76800

bEnableLogging=0

bEnableTrace=0

bLoadDebugInformation=0

bEnableProfiling=0

Merely using the defaults above helped with stuttering tremendously. I never had any CTDs prior, but I did have infrequent lock ups--usually during zone transitions. Too early to tell if these settings will change that, however, I did experience one since adding these settings. I might have to try altering the settings to see if it helps.

Kudos! :thumbsup:

I did this, but I keep randomly crashing when I'm fighting the second group of imperials in helgen's keep. please help.

This is due to some kind of scripting conflict whiten the game or other mods. I don't know how to fix it, because its user specific (depends on which files are messed up/which mods don't agree), so just try uninstalling any mods you have that might be causing this (for me its usually mods that offer new locations to explore that conflict), and you should be fine.

PS whenever you crash after a doing a specific action and you crash every time you repeat that action it means you have a scripting error, not just a random CTD.

It's been almost a year since the last post has been made on this topic but it so much solved my problem that i have to say something... In one word : Thanks!!!

I used to play Skyrim in ultra at the very beginning but the more I installed mods the more I began to experience problems... I had a lot of crash/freeze. I decreased the resolution from ultra to poor... but at the end this great game became just unplayable. I was that desparate I was about to buy a new GC, change my wall computer...

You just saved me from this! I twisted my ini file the way you said and I can now play without any problem :

There are two absolutely essential adjustments that, in my opinion and experience, a player who mods Skyrim should apply to their game:

First, add Boris Vorontsov's ENBoost (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/38649//?) to your game; you do NOT need a ENB profile to use ENBoost, although you can do so. Personally I use the performance version of RealVision (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/30936/?), but whatever suits your personal taste will work. Or none at all; stick to the basic ENBoost.

What does ENBoost do? It puts your game's working memory into VRAM. It works! Be sure to follow instructions in installing it.

Second, use Ewi's ini files (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/36146/?). Trust me, they work, too.

If you are going to mod Skyrim I believe you must be able to tweak and adjust your system to adapt to the mod load you place on it. In my experience, every system is different and what works for one will not necessarily work for others. The two suggestions I gave are excellent places to start from; adjust "slightly", one step at a time, from there.

That assumes, of course, that your mod build is stable, BOSS-organized, and TesVEdit cleaned.

I've got more than 3300 hours into Skyrim, more re-starts than I can count, and at least a dozen game rebuilds behind me. I've learned the hard way that the game can be modded and is unbelievably beautiful after mods are added, but the 32 bit game engine just isn't up to the task of handling what we are throwing at it. Between ENBoost and Ewi's thoughtful .ini tweaks the game is almost stable. CTDs are fewer and fewer and the game more and more playable.

How many mods are in my build? WryeBash says 227.

My system isn't weak, of course, but it's not a monster, either. An i7 2600k running at 4.6 with 16g of RAM and a GTX690 card (2 gigs of VRAM).

Hope these suggestions help.
