A New Power

Quarian looked out on the burning fields reluctantly, although he felt a sudden feeling of selfishness. He shrugged it off and threw his arm foreward, the mercanaries picked there way down the ridge slowely. Eventually they reached the bottom and Quarian called for a halt about ten meters away from the base of the slope. After realizing that there were no soldiers in the immediate area he pushed onward. What seemed like an eternity passed before they reached the first crops, this particular patch had been spared from the flames. One thought stuck in his mind: Armiena.

they were in the heart of the valley in which The capital city of the Galoric Empire was built. To Quarian's surprise the area was quiet. The flames seemed to be dying out and the battle-cries had all but ceased. No more fires were being set, although the distant cries from the burning city of Galor were heard. The group halted once again. Qaurian searched through the dozen or so people who had came with him, to his dismay Alenee was not. Quarian guessed that the genral settling of the chaos meant that the enemy was forming ranks for the final assault, rather than leaving. But Alenee would know for sure...

OOC: Thanks so much for getting the map done.

Armiena follows masses of screaming peasants, running away from demolished houses, destroyed by boulders that overshot the walls. She recalls that although there isn't a moat, there IS a river that passes through the town. Even better, there are a few corpses in it to give her cover.

She runs for the center of the town, pushing peasants out of her way as they panic. A trebuchet collapses one of the gatehouses as she takes a deep breath.

Armiena says a quick prayer, and plunges into the river, hoping that she'll be mistaken for a corpse.

ooc: Dang, I wish I could have posted that map, there is no moat, but there is a river, would you consider editing, plus read the previous post more carefully. (and a trebuchete is not a kind of catapult, but it could serve as a very basic definition)

The sound of a large crash filled the air, Quarian broke into a sprint and the warriors followed.

They were just outside the pile of smouldering rouble that had once served as a city gate. Suddenly the sound of heavy marching filled the air. Turning Quarian saw an endless armada of Soldiers, the front row carried tall tower sheilds and in between them the long spears of the second row poked out, ready to jab. The soldiers swiftly surounded the gate are in a semi-circle, which grew smaller with each passing second...

Quarian ran inside the city....

Akechi made his way into the city with the rest of the group looking for Armiena. While going in and out of alleyways and smaller streets, he got to wondering about the attacking force. Were they here to defeat the current empire as allies of the Old Empire, or were they here for utter conquest. Looking at the current situation he could only think of the worst, but he had hope still.

The red glow seemed to be diminishing as the sun began to rise and overpower the fire-light. Quarian noted that the streets semmed empty, but the countless cries for help came from all around them... The five Horse Tavern was just ahead, as would be Armiena. They ran through the streets at a quick pace, hoping to stay ahead of the army which was sweeping through the city road by road. Finnaly, there it was, Armiena was somewhere inside...

note: when i say "the group" I am refering to the dozen or so mercanaries that Quarian is leading, not your character, which may also command a group of mercanaries if you wish. So do what you want and don't think that you are a part of the Quarian-controlled group of soldiers, and feel free to take a different path, not participate with Quarian's plan or anything else, remember, I want this to be open-ended. You do not have to follow the storyline, you may invent your own path to try to save this land or destroy it. OH NO, now my "note:" is bigger than my post. lol.

Armiena hears seagulls. She bumps into a corpse stuck in the riverbed, and a startled seagull takes flight. Armiena wakes up and takes a moment to get her bearings. She must have fallen asleep! But, no.... not like that. How could she have fallen asleep while trying to play dead. Either way, she managed to avoid being discovered by the rabble pillaging the city.

She swims over to the riverbed and spits some water out. She checks her equipment. Everything is more or less intact; her sword in its scabbard, her bow dangerously wet but still intact, though her bowstrings were all ruined by the dirty water.

Armiena hears the sound of a sword being drawn behind her. She turns, to see a slightly wounded but alive Imperial soldier, shaking with adrenaline.

Quarian threw open the tavern door, but to his dismay the room inside was empty. He retreated back outside and began to call franticcally, hoping his voice would be heard over the ambient noise: "Armiena! Are you there?! Armiena-" Quarian was knocked off his feet. He moaned in pain as he looked at his shoulder, startled.

An arrow had loged itself between the space where his left pauldron and breastplate met, apparently the chain link had been weak there. The arrow emerged from his shoulder in the back and was stuck in the wooden door-frame of the tavern, pinning him in-place as a few soldiers appeared on the road, weapons drawn.

As soon as Akechi saw what had happened to Quarain, he was quickly under the cover of a wall with his bow drawn at the window. Still hoping that the attack was a mistake and these attackers were friends of the Old Empire, Akechi yelled at the attackers with a resounding voice.

"Halt! Are you allies or enemies of the Old Empire of Galor?!?"

If there was no response soon, an arrow would find it's way to the archer that had injured Quarain.

Quarian moaned as he saw a few dozen more soldiers line up on the road. Soon a small hail of arrows was raining down on the mecanaries, one by one five dropped dead, others bleeding. The archers were very skilled. The other soldiers drew swords and raised their iron rimmed sheilds, advancing on their position.

"Relax, I'm not with.... them." Armiena nods her head to the city, while dropping her voice at natural moments. "I'm just a peasant, trying to get out of here before they do the looting, pillaging, and.... raping." Armiena was almost whispering now, but much to her disgust, the soldier was not leaning forward to listen. That ruled out jumping the Imperial and trying to take him by surprise.

"Whatever. Take off your sword, and I may not kill you." He responded. Armiena slowly took off the belt the scabbard was on, trying to hide the symbol of the Galoric Empire. If he thought she had killed for that belt...

"What's that?" the trooper's voice rose sharply.
