Elehom
I dont know if other people have already posted that kind of request, but I m one of those who clearly dislike the both civil war sides. To me, stormcloak are violent revolutionaries and the empire seems like an expanding dicatorship. Why cant we bring peace to skyrim or maybe the player and his followers could conquer it under a new banner :)).... I dont know, but I think some alternatives would be much more immersive in order to roleplay different characters.Any skilled moder intersted? shotgun188
The Empire are good, it's just that the Thalmor control them. The Empire hates the Thalmor but they have to serve them because they know that if they annoy the Thalmor, they'll be crushed. "What a lot of rebels forgot is, the Empire's what's keeping the Thalmor out of Skyrim." Edited March 31, 2012 by shotgun188
behughes
I'm not sure I'd call either side good or bad. As it has been expressed in the past by Todd Howard that The Elder Scrolls stories are not supposed to deal heavily with good and evil, but rather with order and chaos. Some people instinctively think of chaos as being the same as evil, but you must consider that a "chaotic good" archetype is a heroic rogue who fights for liberty (Han Solo, Robin Hood... Ulfric Stormcloak perhaps?), and an "orderly evil" archetype is a tyrant (Darth Vader, Joseph Stalin... the Thalmor) Both factions have traits that disqualify them from being expressly good or evil. On one hand, Stormcloaks favor freedom of region, national sovereignty, and individual liberty, all of which are arguably noble but chaotic traits. On the other hand, they are xenophobic and anti-progressive. Likewise, the Imperial Legion offers cultural and technical enlightenment, strength through unity, wealth and mercantilism, and national security, which are noble orderly traits... but at the same time, they are bureaucratic, decadent, anti-traditional, and have a history of stepping on the toes of other cultures. In this light, the Stormcloaks would be "chaotic neutral" and the Empire "orderly neutral." In this, Bethesda did a great job giving you two factions that are neither good nor evil, and offer a real moral challenge. Unfortunately, Bethesda didn't do such a good job on giving you a meaningful way to influence these factions or answer that moral challenge. I would love to see a mod that would make the Dragonborn's choice have real weight in the game, and maybe even add an option to establishing lasting peace. If you investigate the Elder Scrolls lore, you will learn that the men fleeing Atmora that settled in northern Tamriel were actually the losers of an Atmoran civil war not unlike the current war. The Dragonborn could mediate between the two factions, teaching the Stormcloaks to accept progress and trust other races, while teaching the Empire to respect Skyrim's culture and sovereignty, thus breaking the cycle of violence and unifying them against their common threats, the dragons and the Thalmor. That said, I'm currently brainstorming ideas to fix issues with both the Civil War story and the Main Quest, and you can read all about my ideas and discuss them here: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/634471-main-questcivil-war-overhaul/
