Importing textures from Skyrim

Most "Oldrim" textures will work without any problem in SE. This goes especially for weapons, armours, clothing, bodies, most clutter and furniture items...

Unfortunately, in some cases it isn't that easy.

- Landscape textures need to be updated for SE. The normal maps (..._n.dds) for SE landscape textures contain an alpha channel, which is used for a so-called "specular map". This specular map basically controls, how "shiny" an object looks. Basically this means that landscape texture mods for "Oldrim" need to be converted to SE by someone who knows a bit about texturing and is able to use GIMP or Photoshop... If these landscape textures aren't converted properly, you will get bright shiny objects.

- Skyrim SE doesn't support TARGA texture files any more. So textures with the extension .tga won't work and will probably even crash your game. Same goes for some uncompressed .dds 16bit formats (5:6:5, 4:4:4:4) on Windows 7. On Win 7, these textures will crash your game. On Win 10 they should work. More "modern" mods usually don't use these formats, so chances are that you never will encounter problems like this.

Basically, using "Oldrim" texture mods is simply a game of trial and error. Worst case scenario is CTD. Always make sure to use a mod organizer (NMM, MO) to install texture packs. With a mod organizer, you can easily uninstall newly added textures if they don't work.

On a side note: A lot of the core texture replacers commonly used in "Oldrim" either work out of the box (e.g. AmidianBorn Caves and Mines, Real Roads) or have already been converted to SE. If you're looking for a specific mod and can't find a dedicated SE version, always have a look at the mod's "Oldrim" page. "Noble Skyrim" for example (my personal favourite) has been fully converted, but this SE conversion is hosted on the classical Skyrim Nexus...

You may also want to have a look at the "SEPTIM" guide: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/2846

It contains a long list of texture mods usable in SE. I never had problems with anything fro this list, although I'm on Win 7.
