Question: New Toon From Old Save?

Is this possible to do?

I want to take a save from a toon I have and somehow make a new toon based on that save. For example I have a toon named Gobs. I have saves for Gobs and others and when I first load the game I get to select the toon I want to play with. What I would like to do is to get Gobs to a certain point in the game (save) and use that save to create new toons from that point. This way I can get a toon to certain point and then have many different toons (Melee, Bomber etc) and different toons for different factions, without having to play the game over and over again to get to that higher level point in the game.

Is this possible and how can it be done if you know how. Thanks!

If I understand you correctly , all you really want is to keep a basic save file , and have multiple playthroughs that start from this save file?

If that is the case , I believe what you are looking for is a save manager , that will help you keep these saves in order (especially if you plan on playing several playthroughs at the same time)

but somehow I feel like I just didn't understand what it is you are looking for , so if you could clarify it , I'll do my best to assist

Thanks, let me try it this way but you basically have it correct.

  1. I have a toon (Gobs) and I play that toon until I get to some level, say level 40, and have advanced the main missions up to the point that I have to pick a faction to build the teleporter to the Institute. Now I make this hard save at this point.
  2. In the initial start menu these saves for this toon shows up under the character Gobs.
  3. Now I want to take this save and use it to make a new toon, I'll call her Karen.
  4. I also want to make another toon with this exact same save that is for Cathy.
  5. Now when I go to the initial start menu it asks me to select a save for a character and I can choose from Gobs, Karen and Cathy.
  6. Each toon has their own set of saves now as I advance each toon Gobs, Karen and Cathy separately.
  7. Gobs sides with the Institute, Karen with the Railroad and Cathy with the BOS, etc.
  8. Each will now have their own path and their owns saves moving forward.

I hope this helps explain it better than the OP.

correct me if I'm wrong here (I don't have FO4 installed now , so can't really test myself) , but I recall the game organizing your saves by character name

If this is the case , can't you use something like ShowRaceMenu to just rename your character , which will create a new save profile for this character?

I'm really not sure if this will work , but in theory I can't quite see a reason why it won't (if the game does organize your saves by character , which I believe Skyrim did so FO4 should also do)

couldn't find any recommended save manager program (and I never actually had multiple characters at the same time)

I'll research that command a little and see if that will work. I'll come back and let you know.

In theory as long as the name of the character is changed in the system, that may just show up as a new toon in the start menu. I'll find out that for the lead, this gives me something to try.

Yes, after some research I found that the Skyrim showracemenu command does not work in FO4. You need to use showlooksmenu to change the appearance and showspecialmenu to change those SPECIAL stats and that includes changing the name.

I tested this with a new toon and it works perfectly. The saves under the name of the original toon will still be in the start menu where you can pick a character to play. Then you can load a save and use that showspecialmenu to change the name of the toon and then advance in the game.

Now when you go to load a save you can select a toon and both names will show up as long as you made a new save for the new one.

This will let you advance one toon to a certain point in the game and make new toons from that point. All the new named toons will show up in the start menu as long as you make a new save specifically for that new named toon. This can save a lot of drudgery of working many toons through the initial stages of the game, if you want to explore different paths or playstyles. Work one toon as far into the game as you want and you can then make new toons off of that one, saving you a lot of time and early game tedium.

Thanks for the Skyrim tip that pointed me in the direction I needed to look. I never did anything like that in Skyrim so that command was foreign to me. Thanks again for the help!
