Unofficial Oblivion Patch, textures didn't install

So I used the latest version of TESmodmanager to install the unofficial oblivion patch by adding it as an archive. Everything seemed to have gone smoothly, but once I encountered a group of mages their robes were invisible and were instead replaced by a purple streak.

I subsequently discovered that this was an indication of a missing texture file, and sure enough when I checked my data folder the UOP meshes were there but many of the texture folders were missing. Placing the missing robe folder in the texture folder resolved the issue.

Why would this occur? I And what can I do to prevent it in the future? I only have the mod manager installed currently but I noticed that there are supplemental files on the download page. Do I need one of those in addition with the manager for mods to install properly?

I'm also on windows 7 and have my game installed on an external hard drive, could that cause the issue?

Have you installed ArchiveInvalidation - https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/10724/?tab=description ? If not, that's where I would start. To me, it sounds like the game is using the new meshes that you installed but still trying to map the old .BSA textures to those meshes - hence the purple streak. If you haven't used ArchiveInvalidation yet, I would recommend starting there. Hopefully, that will tell the game to not try and map the packaged .bsa textures.
