Newb Question

Ok, I know there is a thread on installing plugins, but it still does not answer my question. To make it simple, i don't know what to do with the .rar file mods.

From "how to instal plugins" thread:

Guest_davlia00:

"what about .rar files, i got the insciption 2.0 and bank mods and i don't know how to work them????"

Baphomet:

"I don't mean to be curt, but did you even bother to read the initial post??

"You’ll need to have a decent compression utility first. I use Zip Genius, personally, but many people will suggest Win Ace or Win RAR as well. I don’t think it matters as long as you find one you like and learn to use it. Read the Help Files - lots of good stuff in them."

http://www.zipgenius.it/intweb/dl.asp"

(I have no idea how to quote).

Compression utility? I am confused, does it change the file type to be compatable with morrowind? I checked Baphomet's link, but it's dead.

Sorry for being so newbish, but im not into compressing or any of that.

...First off, I suggest you get PowerArchiver. Any application that's as damn... user-friendly... as ZipGenius makes me go into a complex seizure that results in my hard drive being wiped, all data being replaced by the following repeating pattern:

4F 00 4D 00 47 00 20 00 : O M G
6E 00 30 00 30 00 62 00 : n 0 0 b

Now that the application you need to use is out of the way, an archive decoder application such as PowerArchiver converts an archive (...Which is anything from a single file to thousands of files crammed together into a single new file written in what can be best described as "shorthand --" at the most basic level, archiving would convert a file with twenty zeroes to a single zero and the instruction to repeat that zero twenty times over) to the file(s) that it was compiled with -- in the case of mods within an archive, this would be data files, textures, meshes, sounds, and what have you. When you right-click an archive or open it and then select an option to extract it, the conversion takes place and the resulting files are copied to the destination that you choose; you can get most Morrowind plugins to work without any trouble by just extracting them to your Data Files folder and following the steps provided in the plugin's readme (Often, the instructions are just to select the data file in the "Data Files" dialog on the Morrowind Launcher menu).

In short, all you need to do to use RAR files is download an archiver and install it, open the RAR file using the archiver, and extract the RAR file into your Data Files folder.

I see Marxist male without a father was earlier, but this was the post I intend to post. Perhaps it's still helpfull.

I don't know if you have winrar, if you haven't, there are many places where you can download a trial version. For example here.

After that you can with the extract button 'unpack' the .esp file to the data files directory in your morrowind directory.

If you still have problems with it, don't hesitate to ask. An answer is always out there. ;)
