Fallout 4-style Companion Essentialism

I like how Fallout 4 found what I think is a middle ground between completely essential companions, and one that go pop then are gone. They fall down when "killed" while essential, and then either have to be stim-packed, or sent back home to recover or something. In New Vegas, essential companions just stand up again; there's no risk to them, not even a little. Is the fallout 4 system possible in New Vegas?

I've been thinking of implementing this behavior for quite a while but I've never gotten down to it, as I'm currently focused on other projects at the moment.

I love hardcore mode but I hate the fact that companions have permadeath, but I also don't like that in the non-hardcore version when they get knocked out, they revive themselves after 30 seconds. I like how it is implemented in FO4, where you have to use a stimpak to revive your teammates otherwise they get teleported back to their place. I am thinking of linking the Medicine skill with this system as well, so with a low Medicine you have to use more stimpaks while at max Medicine only one would suffice.

I'll leave a reply here whenever I start working on it.

I would think so, it might be as easy as just adding a setRestrain function to their script when they are reduced to 0 health (or a second after, so they lay prone). You'll still be able to communicate with them, but they won't be able to move or go into combat. If your interested in that implementation let me know and I'll look into it for you.
