Facial Animation

How do you go about adding more complex facial animation to a character in a scene? I know how to apply the default static expressions like the ones in the actor creation window under the face animation preview tab, but I'm interested in more natural-looking, more fluid expression sequences. Is there also any way to build custom expressions? In the Actor > Face Anim Preview window there are sliders for creating different facial expressions, but there doesn't seem to be any way to save them to be used in an actual scene.
