NEWSFLASH - Modding Noob crashes skyrim asking for help

So yeah I bought a new computer, and feverishly turned in my 360 skyrim for a pc one. After running stock skyrim on ultra just fine I decided to start adding mods. Like most I probable added too many, but noticed when I started a new game that it crashed when I tried to edit my character at the beginning of the game. I loaded a save I made that skips the opening area right to entering the keep, and used the console to edit race/gender et cetera just fine. Game played fine up until I walked into the plains where you come across the companions fighting a giant. Game slowed WAY down and then either crashed or completely froze. I figure I'm running graphical settings too high, as I downloaded lighting mods and HD texture mods all on highest quality. I njoticed that when Skyrim crashes like that my GPU is running very hot, so I think I'm overloading it, or there may be an issue with it. I'm going to contact the store I bought from and have them send me a new one if that is the case.

I'm running with:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz (Quad Core) 45nm, AM3 6MB Cache'

GPU: ATI Radeon HD 6850 1GB PCI Express 16x dual head

RAM: Corsair Vengence 8GB (2x4GB) PC12800 DDR3 1600 Dual Channel

HDD: Solid State Corsair Force Series

Nothing is overclocked, I used NMM to install the mods, and BOSS to re-order them.

I was hoping someone with a similar set up could suggest which graphical mods would work best for me. Also I knoticed that ATI hasnt yet released a driver that supports skyrim specifically. Does anyone have a good application profile that works well with my GPU?

Thanks everyone for your help

Unfortunately the 1GB HD 6850 does not have enough vram for lots of hi-res mods/ textures. I run at 1280x1024 with hi-res + some other gpu intensive mods like ENB and i hit 1.6 - 1.9GB vram. For a hi-res texture setup with ultra graphics on a full HD 1080 (1920x1080) screen resolution 1GB is not enough, sorry :(

If your GPU is running hot (How hot?) it's possible that the fans are not running properly, are clogged or blocked. Or the air flow inside the case is obstructed. I have seen this when a video card is installed with another card too close to the fan intake, or the video card mounted in the end slot and too close to the case wall. If you can leave an empty slot on the fan intake side of the card. You also need to be sure the air outlet is not obstructed by something. Be sure your case has plenty of airflow also.

The ambient temp is also a factor. How hot is the GPU when just sitting idling - no games running and not doing anything except showing the wallpaper. Wait about 15 minutes to allow it to stabilize before taking a reading. Then crank it up and play a while and take another reading They cool quickly when not under load though. If you can, take the reading while actually playing instead of stopping the game to read the temp.

Checking the reviews, this card does run hot. One reviewer even suggested a custom cooling setup. - a fan on the side of the case blowing external air directly onto the card.

thanks for the help. Im going to clean install and shoot for high settings instead of ultra and see if that makes a difference. I think there is something wrong with the fan on the GPU. actually, and since this is less than two months old I'm going to in contact with the store I purchased it from.

Should have bought Nvidia. Oh well. Live and learn.

If any has a AMD Vision profile for the GPU that works well and is willing to share I would appreciate them very much.
