Druid class build & suggestions/opinions?

I'm working on an ideal or as close to an ideal setup for a Druid in Oblivion. Having never used Alchemy before, its the basis of the class and inspired it. Nothing original, but I'm not totally sure of the most logical setup of skills, attributes, and birth sign.

I'm going for something along the lines of a Dungeons & Dragons type Druid (my knowledge of D&D is highly limited, thus why I'm seeking opinions).

I know the Druids of D&D can morph into animals; haven't seen a mod for that. I know there is a animal-summoning mod, but I'm steering away from this, as it both requires Conjuration (to me a a skill not befitting of a Druid) and replaces the stock summons entirely.

I've gathered up some fitting mods already for a Druid, asking here and scouring for what I could find. I know a Dryad would make logical sense for the class but I'm already set on using an elf (Lineage).

All further ranting aside, here's the idea I have currently & given reasons:

BIRTHSIGN: The Lady (just seemed best, it was that or The Mage for me)

SPECIALIZATION: Magic (focused on Restoration, Alchemy & Alteration, I felt this made sense)

ATTRIBUTES: Strength & Willpower OR Intelligence (Strength to support Blunt & Blade, not sure between Int or Wil though)

SKILLS:

- Alchemy: One of the major focuses of the class. I wouldn't see a need to change this.

- Alteration: Manipulation of animals and shield spells, seems fitting in that sense.

- Light Armor: Druids wear natural types of armor, leather and furs, which fall under light armor. I'd be willing to go without armor though if anyone feels it makes more sense.

- Blunt: As I recall D&D Druids used blunt weapons such as clubs often, so I felt this was right.

- Blade: Again, I believe D&D (3rd edition by the way) stated Druids using various types of short blades in combat.

- Illusion: Not totally sure here, but I thought it made more sense to use magic for concealment for a Druid rather than sneak, sneak seems more Ranger-oriented (in terms of nature-based classes).

- Restoration - another key skill of the class to me.

Other than that I'm seeking any suggestions. I'd like to set this up in the most logical way but I'm unsure of a lot. I'm running solely off of limited knowledge of mostly Dungeons and Dragons.

Certain skills are in debate to me. I don't feel any of the other magic skills fit. I'm not sure about Marksman, because it seems too ranger-like. But if anyone can justify any ideas I'm willing to hear it, and thanks in advance for any help! I don't need any suggestions for mods unless you have something you're willing to share that isn't hosted here or Planet Elder Scrolls. Otherwise, I just need to work on the class itself. =)

I'm honestly glad I got a quick response AND from someone knowledgeable about D&D.

I'm shocked that Alchemy doesn't suit them! I did exactly think as you implied about relating Alchemy to gathering plants. I assumed a nature-based class would be into Alchemy.

With that thought, I'm fully inclined to implement Marksman as a major skill now. What about Blade and Blunt, though? Should I use either, or neither one?

Already a step ahead of you on the animal companion - I'm using a wolf (Fenrir; level scales with the player AND he's essential).

I'm using the light-skinned Lineage Elf (Lineage Elves are just my favorite race mod in general; I'm reserving the Dark Elf for a cleric sometime in the future).

Beyond these suggestions, I still need more input on skills, and major attributes and birth sign.

But thank you very much for your help, macmert - having direct input from a long-time D&D player leaves no room for doubt on what a D&D Druid is like. Thanks!

Anyone else, keep ideas coming! Hope I see more tomorrow, after a long day of schoolwork today, it's time for bed ...

New ideas based on current suggestions:

Sign: The Lady or The Mage [likely The Lady if no one objects]

Specialization: Magic

Attributes: Willpower/Intelligence and Agility/Speed [can't decide entirely]

Skills:

- Alteration [necessary for creature commanding spells and shields, etc.]

- Blade [secondary weapon, unless not needed, or if it should be replaced with Blunt]

- Marksman [now that I've been told Druids DO in fact use bows, I'd prefer it as a major]

- Illusion [i still think it should fit for charming and calming magic]

- Restoration [read around online; it seems Druids use healing magic]

- Light Armor [as I said, they typically wear different types of light armor]

- Sneak [as I was informed , Druids do use stealth]

Amending based on what I've been told so far; I'm almost wondering if I shouldn't fit in Destruction based on knowing that a Druid can use lightning spells and whatnot, if nothing else for its attribute damaging spells. I'd use Conjuration if I had a mod that gave me a large supply of animal summons without replacing the stock summons.

Well You're welcome... I love the nature based classes in D&D (I roleplayed as elven ranger for 5-6 years so I know a lot :D) and I would love to contribute to a druid class in Cyrodill...

If you want to use alchemy in fact it can be fine to use, since you use the ingame skills and attributes :D but I dont think it would be suitable for a druid since alchemy is really used by the mages and arcane magic users in D&D. On various computer games the alchemy is used as a no cross class skill (Means any class can use it without penalty) so you can make healing potions and such but a druid might not need it since she casts divine based spells, not as powerful healing spells as a priest but she has some good healing spells too... So in fact using alchemy is your choice but for role playing sake I would recommend you use magic for healing since the druid is a hybrid class, not as powerful as the ranger or not as magically strong as a priest...

on birth sign, you can use Lady but I dont remember really :D was it the kiss that paralyzes the target? I would prefer mage or maybe shadow, since you would want to sneak in woods and forests, since that environment is your home :D I would also mention that the druids dont really like the way the city folk live, they dont like being in cities for long and they cant stand to live in any city...

In fact if you take a look at Neverwinter Nights 2 There was a lovely druid companion, a female elf, by the end of the game she was quite powerful... And she had some spells like camuflage, increases the sneaking and hiding skills, so sneaking is an option for the druid class, AFAIK it was not a cross class skill in D&D...

Specilization might be magic to be a defensive and caster druid, or combat if you want to be an offensive druid...

Again for attributes, any pair could be fine, but ı would prefer willpower/int since you will rely on your spells much...

Marksman is definetely a major skill, but if you are an elf, since in D&D the elves can use longswords and long bows regardless of class restrictions :D so if you are a human druid you would only use light crossbows and throwing daggers and darts, since there is not throwable items in oblivion (But there were some mods I guess :D)

For armor, you can use light armor alright, I remember Chain mail is light armor in Cyrodill, like mithril and elven, since you are an elf :D you might use elven armor :D But please use green colored armors, cause elven armors are a bit colorful to wear it in forests :D

Illusion is essential for a druid since you can cast chameleon, well the name speaks for itself, you can use it to blend in nature :D

Shapechange is essential for the druid since her real power is to transform in to various animals, in the computer games the transmutation is limited to 5 or 6 different animals but infact the druid can shapechange in to any natural (Not other plane creatures eg. demons, angels) from an elephant to a mosquito :D...

For close combat ı prefer to use a slashing weapon (Since you are an elf it could be a long sword or a schimitar) and a shield, or some 2 handed weapon, preferrably a quarter staff :D But there are no staves in the game to hit...

You can use destruction to cast lightning bolts and frost spells since AFAIK the druids can cast cone of cold or cold based spells thou I am not sure... Find a Player's Handbook to find out more D&D spells and take a look at the divine druid spells to see which one suits you... You can even cast lightning and frost shields on yourself...

For compainon I prefer a panther but a wolf would do just nice :D

So summon up:

Birthsign: Mage (Shadow??)

Major skills:

Marksman

Alteration

Illusion

Light armor

Sneak (my preffered choice :D)

Restoration

Athletics (I love a high dex elf in D&D my str would always be 14 and dex 20 :D)

Specilization: Magic

Attributes: WP/INT

Hope it helps :D Dont hesitate to PM me if you have more in depth questions...

When it comes to druids I know a some about the D&D druids but my expertise is more for the Warcraft Druids. As Macmert stated Druids don't like to live in cities so I downloaded this mod http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17169 this is a pretty good one too http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13237. Finding nature based armors is a massive pain though. I'm using this race http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17204. I spent the last 6 hours looking for some leafy naturish armor/clothes and have found 1 possible one but it's white. If you find any good ones you'll have to pm me with a link :).

Thanks a ton, guys!

macmert - I like your idea a lot for skills and whatnot. I think I'll try it, using the mage since with my old setup, I found myself limited on magicka. As far as Intelligence & Willpower; what if I combined one of those with Agility for my Marksman & Sneak? Though I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference. I'm using an Elf as my chosen race (from the Elves of Lineage mod, since it's my favorite custom race mod).

Blacksnake89 - Thank you; I'm already using the Enchanted Tree Home, it's really nice. I thought about using the Dryad, but I love using Elves too much. I keep the Dryad race backed up in case I change my mind. I've tried them and they obviously fit the Druid idea the best. I wouldn't mind seeing the white nature-ish armor you mentioned, may I have a link to it? There was an awesome mod perfect for a Druid or Dryad that was removed a day later called "Nature's Bounty"; if you've seen any screen shots by Floydian1 of his Dryad character, it was the green leaf outfit she was wearing. It was a mod for UFF Fantasy Figures. But I haven't found it anywhere else and it's no longer here. I'd keep your eyes open for it in case it shows up. I know, fitting armor is hard to find. But I'm using a plugin with Mart's Monster Mod calling Hunting & Crafting, which allows for making light armors out of animal pelts.

Thank you very much for the help guys! I'm going to take a try at macmert's set-up with no Alchemy, I'll reserve that skill for a cleric-type class that I want to make later. If any other suggestions or ideas come up, anyone please PM me with them!

There is ... a mod that you may polymorph into an animal and attack as it's type. With some modifications and permission from the author I'm sure you could make it any animal you want. But now it's only a wolf. The mod is called L.A.M.E. and you can download it PES.

Blacksnake89: Another link for druid's to use, called Nature's Bounty is here
