A little bit of help in Creation Kit

Recommended Posts

Hello there, I was just wondering if I could get some help with trying to retexture clothing in Creation Kit. I have the .dds file all ready and good to go, it's just how would I place it properly on the clothing I'm trying to retexture for a mod I'm trying to make? I've been trying to follow multiple tutorials and I'm not really getting much dice as there's not really many good ones to find online, (especially on Youtube). Can anyone help me with this issue?

Hey there, if it's just a retexture, you don't need to use the Creation Kit for it. You just need to package it in it's correct path so the Mod Manager can put it in the right place.

Example if you were retexturing Hancock's outfit, the way your file would need to be packaged is: textures > clothes > Hancock > Hancock_d.dds.

Hope that helps!

If you want to replace the textures of an existing object, femshepping has the correct info.

If you want your textures to appear on new clothing items (which might be what you actually want to do - I can't tell) you need to create a new material file (copy the original one of the mesh you're using) and change the copy to point to your new .dds file using Material Editor. Then you can create a Material Swap in the CK and apply that to a new Armor Addon (those are what actually make up your armor/clothing as it appears in game), which you can then reference from a new Armor item.

Alright, so I followed along to what you suggested and made a new material file for the armor in the material swap. Though, when I try to place it on the armor in creation kit, it won't show on the model. What I'm trying to do is I'm trying to make a new armor/clothing from an already existing model in the game, but adding a different texture over it. I'm trying to do what others how others were able to do using the GECK for Fallout New Vegas and for Fallout 3, but as the Fallout 4 GECK is much different, it's hard to even do a simple retexture to make new armor/clothing.

This was the type of retexturing I was used to doing in the GECK:

  • Do the file paths in your material swap record contain typos?
  • Did you add the material swap to the armor item or its armor addons? The material swap in the armor item is used for the worldspace object of the armor, not the mesh on the player. That is made up of armor addons. You might need to create those if you haven't already. Use copies of the originals.

Maybe you should post screenshots.

I had the same issue with armor and found out that it's easier to do it in FO4Edit. Find any outfit that uses material swaps (i.e. all bandanas) and check how it works in FO4Edit. There is some setting that is only visible in FO4Edit and is critical, but I can't remember now it's name.

It's so much easier with other types of objects.
