Trying to single out lag cause

I've had Skyrim since it came out and have never had an issue with running it at the highest settings. Lately I've had to back down some of the settings because of extensive, almost game-breaking lag and stuttering. I've tried several "fixes" and the problem persists. Since I'm no computer expert I'd just like to know if my computer should be able to run the game at the highest settings. I do have several mods that I can remove to improve performance but I'd like to know specifically about my computer and if it should be enough.

Processor: i7 930 Intel (2.8GHz 8MB cache)

Memory: 12GB RAM

Video Card: 2 GB ATI Radeon HD5970

Sound Card: Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Latest drivers for hardware and updates for the OS.

Thanks in advance for any imput.

i'm having the same issue like you...previously i was playing skyrim really fine..but after a marathon, suddenly the game started to lag, and nothing i did removes the stuttering..with or without any mod.

really confusing.

anyone has a solution? i tried the "fixes" on skyrimnexus, but it doesnt help.

Yeah, I'm not sure if it's a driver issue with the latest ATI driver or possibly a conflict with the latest Skyrim patch, but I logged close to 300 hours on the game before this issue started.

Sorry to hear you're having it too but at least I'm not the only one so maybe there's a fix somewhere.

Hi!

Have you tried Skyrim Extended Launcher yet? http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5407

Ever since I started using that and changed my CPU core affinity, I got waaaay less in-game lag!

Hope this helps!

Sincerely

hi..thanks for the advice..but i cant seem to run it...it just closes itself..but when i run the game normally.. its fine.

thanks

OP: your computer should absolutely crush this game at full settings. I get good fps at mostly high settings (w/ medium shadows), and I've got an i5, 4gb ram and a 512mb video card. Or at least I used to. I have also recently started to get brutal in game lag. Have you also noticed longer save times? If so, check your save file and see how big it is. Apparently, they're supposed to be like 10mb or so, but mine have recently jumped up to over 100mb, which is definitely causing the lag and long save times. I started a new game, just to test, and it runs with no lag, and regular save times, and the save file is less than 10mb. I've been asking around, and no one seems to know how to fix this.

hmm..i dont think it because of the settings..bcos previously he was able to run it.

anyway, now that you have brought it up, you are very right...the lag started exactly as my save suddenly became 20 mb...where finally i choose an ealier save which only 10 mb in size, and now the lag is almost gone...and my save is only 6 mb.

something that causes the save became big all of a sudden, seems what causes our games to lag.

no choice but to revert to an older save.

PS: i tried a friend savegame, and it works the same smooth also.

seems a really odd bug

Yeah. I don't have any old saves for this character. Wasn't exactly expecting something like this. Damn bethesda and their lack of proper bug checking. I was reading the the ps3 version was getting this exact same problem, and they put out a patch for it, which a lot of people have claimed didn't work, but they haven't even acknowledged that this is happening in the pc version.
