thepeacemaker707
Within the last few weeks, I suddenly began experiencing crippling FPS drops while traveling on foot throughout the world. I'm talking drops down to 4 or 5 FPS. This has happened to me on dozens of occasions, and I've noted a few consistent spots, where I travel often, that I can think of off the top of my head. One spot is the forest between Hangman's Alley and Oberland Station, near the UFO crash site. Another is between Abernathy Farm and Red Rocket. (I've even tried "going around" as far as the western edge of Concord. But once I get near enough to Red Rocket, it never fails to start lagging.) (Note that Red Rocket and Hangman's Alley are two buggy settlements for me as it is, maybe because they're built up so much? Actually Red Rocket isn't that built up, but Sanctuary kinda is. I will CTD if I try to load a save where I'm in close proximity to RRTS or Hangman's.) The lag lasts for about 15-20 seconds or so, then once I get near the location, my FPS normalizes. I'm running the base game only (No DLC). I have a respectable gaming rig. [i5-4590, R9 390, 16GB RAM, Windows 8.1]. Not incredibly fancy but it usually gives me very decent performance--before this problem my absolute lowest drops were to maaaybe 20 FPS in a very demanding situation, but even that wouldn't be sustained. 50-60 FPS under "normal" circumstances. The two top ones were uninstalled an re-installed, since they were very suspect, but uninstalling did not remedy the issue. "Old Style Criticals" was suspect because the mod works like this: "Whenever you walk past a cell boundary (e.g., between Sanctuary and Red Rocket), the script checks you AND your current follower for the perk, and gives it to you/them if not." Vidid Fallout - All In One was installed as a replacement/consolidation from the individual Vivid mods, which I was using for a very long time. Had to check it though just due to the nature of the mod. Around the same time I also uninstalled Fallout 4 Seasons (Spring), as my in-game calendar entered the summer months. When I did this, I had issues uninstalling it (modded textures persisted), and at the suggestion of the "trustee" of that mod, I deleted the \Landscape folders in \textures\ and \meshes\. I have very little knowledge of cells and their boundaries, so I don't really know if I'm on the right track with that theory. But I'm willing to try any suggestions you guys have on how to fix or troubleshoot the problem.
Zzyxzz
Papyrus will not cripple your fps except papyrus is dumping stacks. This may lead to freezes and stutters, but those are unlikely. Do you have build a settlement at those locations? Deactivate all of your mods and try to visit those locations again.
jones177
Hi I use these steps when I get low frame rate. 1) Try another character save. Low fps like CTDs can get into a save. 2) Use a utility to check for CPU over heating. It will throttle if it gets too hot. 3) Update video drivers. When the game came out, all my slowdowns were caused by drivers. I still get the slow downs in some interiors. To fix I save, switch off & reload. 4) Check for save game bloat. 5) Check for an i/o issue. Some hardware setups get i/o lag after you build settlements up to certain point. To test, start a new character save & test your lag areas. I use the settings on this page for one of my computers. It has lag without it. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/808/ These setting do nothing for my other computer. They both use the same make SSD. Good Luck. Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm going to try them all as soon as I get a chance. A few questions: Regarding #4, how do I check for save game bloat? How do I determine if my save is bloated, and what can I do about it? Regarding #1, if I determine it is only this save, then what do I do? Do I have to abandon my playthrough or what? jones177
Hi To me save game bloat is when the save file size gets very large & impacts performance. My saves start out at around 8mbs. My level 130 saves are around 60mbs. My bloated save is 95mbs. I do not know why one of my character saves got bloat and others have not. I had a similar issue with Skyrim years ago. It turned out to be ash piles not disappearing. I have had to abandon saves that get unplayable. I abandoned my original 2015 character saves because after all the DLCs & updates they got too laggy. I only started playing them again because they run fine with my new CPU(i7 8700k). Later
SKKmods
Run the Fallout performance monitor to check for load, but being an old game engine most limits are internal architecture rather than hardware. Enable Papyrus Debug Logging to check for stack dumps and who is causing them.
