zeata23
so today school some of the people in my classroom were talking about sharks, so of course people bring up Jaws.... and then they all start saying how sharks are evil and should be killed.... i know sharks are designed to kill.... but so are dogs.... why can't people pay attention to facts and not fiction? so serious question: Why do people hate sharks so much when you are more likely to be killed by a fall from 3 feet than to be eaten by a shark... (or something like that, not entirely sure on statistics...) :geek:
McclaudEagle
Because movies like Jaws have long given an unrealistic portrayal of many sharks, especially the Great White, as vicious man-eaters that'll eat you as soon as look at you. This in turn, has caused people to become fearful of them, and fear is a hard thing to erase. When Jaws first came out, coastal tourism was hit hard because people actually thought that that's what sharks are like, and people feared getting into the water. In all reality, there are only a few sharks that will actively hunt and eat people, the Bull Shark and Tiger Shark. Quinn's story in Jaws about the USS Indianapolis is true, Tiger Sharks, as well as the Oceanic White Tip Shark were attacking and killing sailors during the real life sinking of the ship. Despite the fearful image of Great Whites, few of them will ever actually attack humans, and the most fatalities are caused by Tiger and Bull Sharks. McclaudEagle
Well, Steven Spielberg stated that after creating Jaws, he felt stupid for misinterpreting them so badly.
